Flat Iron: Superb Steak for a tenner

Flatiron Steak (Soho) - 17 Beak Street, nr Carnaby Street

So my friend Max and I headed to Flat Iron on a muggy Monday evening in the mood for steak. This little beasty is a stand alone eatery (although word on the street is they are looking for another venue!) just off the insanely busy Regent Street.

We arrived around 7pm and were told there would probably be about a 45 minute wait, feeling meaty we said it was cool given a buzzer that went crazy when your table was ready and sang a mega annoying melody if you went to far away (it happened in the hummingbird bakery…..)

So after a mooch we came back a little early (like 7.30 ish) and nipped downstairs to the cocktail bar. The lighting was……ambient (totally couldn’t see) but it was sultry and cool for a cocktail bar. To be honest after about 10 minutes of instagramming our cupcake photos we were led upstairs to our table.

They all sat 6 so we were seated with 2 other couples, it was a bit cozy but the atmosphere was buzzing so it was actually alright.

The food was pretty damn good. £10 for steak, £2.50 fires and £3 for creamed spinach. Salads were on the menu too for £3.00 (to be honest the side salad was pretty good on its own) So the price was ace for steak. I learned the flat iron cut is hard to butcher (takes time + only 4 per cow), so they only use the best guys! In the UK we don’t really bother with the cut hence flat iron can offer it for such little coinage.

The quality was amazing, the steak was cooked so well and even. The attention to detail ace, little sprinkle of salt and olive oil ontop, magic! Even the side salad had a awesome dressing on it. Everything was displayed in little kooky pots and you got free popcorn to start!

Verdict?

Nosh: Really good quality and interesting. Steak cooked beautifully, they recommend medium-rare. Chips were chips but creamed spinach was really interesting. Plus there is often an interesting special (could be a burger, different cut etc. a surprise each time!) to keep you on your toes. 9/10

Dollar Dollar: £10 for steak, you’re on to a winner. 9/10

Service: Its funny a couple of the waitresses were so lovely especially the welcomers! However one was a bit snappy, and the guy who took our order/bill just looked a bit bored. Buut overall the staff were cool. 6/10

Atmosphere: Buzzing on a Monday, tables were a little too close for comfort but that comes hand in hand with the cosy venue, shame there’s no outside seating but good buzz. 7/10

Notes: No reservations, so get pretty busy with waiting times of 45 mins – 2 hours!

Definitely worth a visit, total novelty for Londoners and visitors alike. That’s right I said steak for £10! Foods a showstopper, interior is shabby chic and located for a cheeky post dinner visit to Soho 🙂
