Ladies and Gentlemen: The world class cocktail bar breathing life back into K -Town’s night scene

In December last year, Kentish Town’s ex-public lavatory opened its doors for business once again; this time transformed into a classy cocktail bar aptly named, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Whilst the instillation of bars into disused underground toilets may not be anything new, Ladies and Gentlemen has managed to propel itself into the listings for ‘Best Bars’ not just in London or the UK but around the world. It is easy to see why.

Tucked underground, cosy and dimly lit with original features such as pre WW2 marble flooring and wall décor including Victorian urinals (restored and meticulously clean I might add) the bar is surprisingly welcoming.  Fresh cut flowers, rows of books and a stand up piano help set the tone and the scattering of just a few tables make this venue feel exclusive but by no means pretentious.  In fact the atmosphere on a Saturday night is reminiscent of a bustling wartime local. The space is small but friendly floor staff ensure it never feels uncomfortably full.  In fact chances are if you don’t arrive by 9.30pm on a weekend you will miss out.

Lets get to the best bit: the drinks.  Delicious, potent cocktails are concocted by experts using fresh locally sourced ingredients, such as soft fruit from Hampstead Heath allotments and syrups using Kentish Town honey. Whilst there is a seasonal set list with prices starting at a very reasonable £8, bar staff are more than happy to whip up something off the card. (Warning: these cocktails are VERY easy to drink, pace yourself!)

I sampled their Easter inspired menu and was quite literally blown away by ‘The Bunnies Tail’ (see picture!) made with house pour, Vestal Vodka, an obscene amount of cream and topped off with chocolate eggs! For those who fancy something a little more classic, their Espresso Martini’s takes some beating. Many of the liquors on offer are homemade and a 16-litre copper still produces bespoke spirits on site most notably, Highwayman Gin.

The brainchild of Willy Borrell (proud K -Town local and owner of Vestal Vodka) Ladies and Gentlemen has contributed towards making Kentish Town a more interesting part of London. Sadly this was not without a fight, Willy was locked into an 18 month battle with residents who opposed the idea of another nightspot. Luckily he emerged victorious and was granted a 15 year lease, meaning that the good people of London town will be able to enjoy world class tipples for years to come.

In London’s sea of pretentious, overpriced, chain and members bars, Ladies and Gentlemen is a breath of fresh air.  It is a family business and as a result the love and care that has gone into every aspect is evident. Whether you’re on a first date, celebrating a birthday or simply looking for a great night out Ladies and Gentlemen is guaranteed to impress.

My advice – head there soon, gems like this won’t stay secret for long.
