LONDON CREATIVE: Biff

We were very excited to interview one of the brightest and talented Illustrators the UK has to offer! Biff has worked in New York and now we have him back in London, working his magic.

1. HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO ILLUSTRATION?

I’ve drawn for as long as I can remember. My parents would have to carry around a pencil and paper literally everywhere we went, just incase I had an urge to draw (which was 97% of the time.) I can’t remember a time where I’ve consciously grown up wanting to be an illustrator, I just knew it would happen. It wasn’t until college when I actually had some real self direction.

2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I would describe my style as playful, thoughtful and honest.

3.  WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH THE MOST?

I’ve typically, always used pencils and fine-liners. However at the moment I’m really into acrylics and painting. I’ve embraced the fact that I can’t really draw straight lines and haven’t got the patience to put up with perfection. Mistakes are fun, charming and human.

4. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL AS AN ILLUSTRATOR?

I wouldn’t class myself purely as an illustrator, as I’ve been working for various agencies using all sorts of platforms/ mediums. It’s more exciting to be uncomfortable. I think comfort leads to predictability and results in a loss of value. My ultimate goal as a creative person would involve sustaining myself purely on making whatever I want and  to travel all over the world in doing so.

5. IS THERE A BRAND, AGENCY OR ANYONE ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH, WHICH IS HIGH ON YOUR WISH LIST?

Oh God, so many! Right now, I’d love to art direct a film/ tv series- Design the posters, titles, look and feel etc.. So maybe Netflix would be great for that. Google would obviously be fun. Converse seem like a creative bunch too! I love creating work based on music- Lianne La Havas has blown all my socks off with her past 2 albums. Maybe a music video! Lianne? I’d also like to work on something charitable to balance my karma out. Water Aid? Something whale related?

6. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES IN LONDON TO HANG OUT IN?

My favourite pub in London by far is The Faltering Fullback in Finsbury Park- Great atmosphere and a stupidly cool beer garden. The Blind Pig in Soho serves some mind-blowing cocktails and also has a sneaky, exclusive feel to it- I’m not one for noisy clubs anymore. I quite enjoy having fully functional hearing and vocal chords when I wake up. Other than that I’m quite partial to roof gardens and dingy cinemas. Both of which can be found in Dalston.
