Motown Revue Live at 100 Wardour Street Soho Review

soul

Soho has to be one of the coolest places to visit in London and a visit to 100 Wardour Street now has to be top of your list. I only recently discovered this bar on the 14th of September when I was invited along to 100 Wardour St to celebrate the best Soul & Motown vibes with their new weekly Soho Soul Town night. After finding the bar a little way off from Piccadilly Circus, the humble exterior gives way to an absolutely stunning interior.  The venue is situated in the same location as the former Marquee Club. Famous for hosting performances from musical greats such as David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Jimi Hendrix and The Who. This is reason enough for musical fans to visit the bar and restaurant.

Given its famous musical history, it’s no surprise that 100 Wardour Street have created themed musical nights throughout the week. Every Wednesday Soul to London with Motown Revue live on stage is on the menu and oh what a night! The basement bar down stairs is absolutely gorgeous. Reminiscent of an old jazz nightclubs of a bygone era, the dimly lit bar despite is size is surprisingly intimate. It’s definitely the perfect location for food, cocktails and listening to what has to be one of the sexiest musical genres of all time.

Seated with a couple of glasses of pink champagne to and some bar snacks we waited for the band to take to the stage. Now before I talk about the music, I have to say the drinks and food at 100 Wardour Street is something else. Tasty chicken and beef skewers, chips and the best Soft Shelled Crab I’ve had in London were the perfect snacks to nibble on while we waited for the music to start.

Now it was a good thing my friend and I ate prior to the band starting as I don’t think we were sat in our seats nearly the entire performance. From the minute the band walked out on stage and began singing ‘Isn’t She Lovely,’ ‘My Girl’, ‘Sugar Pie Honey Bunch’ and ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’ we were up on that dance floor swaying and singing along with the band. All the guys had voices of liquid sex mixed with liquid gold and were perfection. unnamed (1)

By the second act, other audience members had joined us standing up to dance along with songs such as ‘Let’s Get It On’, ‘Respect’ and ‘Natural Woman’. While I’d like to claim it was my friend and I starting the trend of dancing that gave others the courage to join us, I can’t. I know better and the credit goes all the band on stage. They performed fabulously and I wished I’d gotten their name plus the extremely talented lady who arrived on stage to sing’Respect’. Aretha Franklin would have certainly been impressed. Even I had to do a double take and be sure it wasn’t her singing up on stage herself.

Wednesday nights at 100 Wardour Street has to be the hottest thing in London at the moment. Take your mum and dad, take a date, go out with the girls or guys and just have a great night. If Motown and Soul Music isn’t your style of music, check out the other musical genres throughout the week. It’s a great night out and best of all, it’s completely free entry.
