Review: The Donkey Show

Proud Camden is the current venue for The Donkey Show, a Disco retelling of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is not your parents’ Shakespeare but is one of funniest and sexiest immersive theatre experiences you will ever attend.

THE DONKEY SHOW, Proud Camden, London, Britain - 10 June 2016

Starting at the Proud Camden’s Wonderland bar for pre-drinks we mingled with some of the actors prior to the performance before the story of four lovers begins. Be prepared to be covered in stars, glitterfied and discofied during the wait to get into ‘Club Oberon’ but this just makes it the anticipation for the show even more exciting. After about a half hour wait while guests checked in their coats and bags, it was time to begin.

The Donkey Show is really one of those performances I’m at a loss for words to describe, it has everything acrobats, fire breathers and gorgeous men in tiny shorts. It’s all really too much to take in because you are in the center of the performance. Actors will engage with guests during the show and have everyone on their feet dancing. I was even twirled around by one of fairies as I boogied along with the impressive disco soundtrack. Now while a little background knowledge of a Midsummer Night’s Dream does help, it’s not a requirement. You just need to have a good love of disco music because there are over 25 disco hits in the show.

I Will Survive, Carwash, We Are Family, Don’t Leave Me This Way, You Sexy Thing, Young Hearts Run Free, I Love the Nightlife and I’m Every Woman (to name a few)will have guests dancing and singing along as the play is acted around you. My friend and I were in awe throughout the entire performance as it is such an flamboyant and exuberant show, it’s hard not to be. Shakespeare would be proud of this rendition of a Midsummer Night’s Dream! Definitely make your way down to Camden to see the show, it’s a seriously fun night out you won’t regret. Plus on Tuesdays, 100 tickets are available for purchase for only £15. Normal price tickets are between £25-£35. The Donkey Show is only available for a strictly limited time between 9 June – 21 August 2016 and has a running time of 1 hour 30 mins. Friday 8pm and Saturday 9pm tickets include entry to stay and party in the club.
