Squid in batter

The month of February brought me to yet another Thai restaurant, this time in Holborn. I know it seems like I am a Thai food enthusiast, I am really am not, it just seems to be where I end up these days.

The restaurant itself has beautiful décor, I was in love with the gold and black leather seats, the place is small but that made it feel even more personal. It was the perfect setting for the friend’s birthday which brought me there.  The only thing that irritated me a little, but again this is preference was the music; I do not associate Tulisa, Cheryl Cole and One Direction to a nice meal. I felt like I was in a department store looking for clothes, it was very off putting. For some reason at 11pm it turned into gangster rap time, I found it really offensive, I think they were hinting to the group I was with that we were the only people left in the restaurant. So maybe if they offended us with the music we would leave. I was NOT impressed.

Onto the food, the starters were amazing. We had a variety of starters from golden wraps, which were pork and chicken minced in sacks of  deep fried filo pastry. We also had prawn toast and vegetable spring rolls. The starter that had us all talking was the squid, it was divine. I am not sure what sauce they cooked the batter in, but it was by far the best squid I have ever tasted, it was so moreish it could have easily been my main meal.

The main meal was to say the least forgettable I has Paad prik, which was a beef stir fry with chilli. I asked the waiter if they could add broccoli to my stir fry, he did not even enquire with the kitchen he just said no that they can’t. Which I found most annoying, the least he could have done was ask if it was possible. The main was tasteless; I did not enjoy it at all. One of my friends had a very anaemic looking Thai green curry, it wasn’t the best, but was edible.

It was not my favourite place to eat out, as I said before the ambience was spoilt by the music, the waiting staff seemed a little fed up and the mains were standard. But for a small birthday dinner, it was a reasonably priced place to eat. I would suggest that you go and find out for yourself, who knows the red wine I had may have dulled my taste buds that night.
