Zedel Follies Review

FolliesOn the 14th of October, I attended Live At The Zedal for the first time and got to witness the awe-inspiring Zedel Follies. From the start of their Halloween themed show where all five ladies serenaded the audience with a rendition of The Monster Mash to their final performance of Thriller, I found myself singing quietly along to myself. I definitely don’t have the talent these ladies on the stage have, plus the audience didn’t pay to see me sing Karaoke.

I’m a firm believer that a mark of a good show is when the audience wants to involuntarily sing along with the performers on stage. Looking at the audience on the night, it was evident that the majority of people were having the same reaction. I certainly wouldn’t have been alone if I’d decided to sing out loud.

Highlights from the show for me were:

–       Top Hat’s Summer Strallen’s “Back to Black” where her soulful voice resinated deep within me.

–       Groundhog Day’s Emma Lindars’ performance of Adele’s “rolling in the deep” which had me believing Adele was on stage in disguise!

–       In the Height’s Emma Kingston’s Gravity and it felt that she was singing to a long forgotten lover. It wasn’t a song I’d heard before but one I won’t forget.

–       Bend It Like Beckham’s Sejai Keshwala ‘s version of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. Sejai’s voice gave a more husky performance and a grown up feel to this song. It was definitely a huge improvement to an already catchy song.

–       Wicked’s Natalie Green singing Celine Dionne – “it’s all coming back to me now”. This was one of the songs I struggled the hardest to not sing out loud to. Celine’s a guilty pleasure and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

All time favourites of the show had to be when all the Zedel Follies sang a jazzed up version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Sejai sang Beyonce’s “Daddy Lessons”. Both songs were absolutely amazing and the style changes of the songs were an absolute Joy.

The lovely couple I was sitting described the venue as one where you feel like you’re seeing the show in a bar on a fancy cruise liner. They weren’t wrong. The lovely French Inspired Art Deco bar is definitely the perfection location to watch The Zedel Follies. The lovely ladies perform at Live At The Zedel on a regular basis so make sure you book your tickets online for a night of music you won’t forget.
