Casual Leopard: Balham’s Best New Hideaway for Food, Drinks & Vibes
Tucked away in the vibrant heart of Balham is Casual Leopard, the latest venture from acclaimed chef Scott Hallsworth, already known for his buzzing sushi joint Freak Scene, which sits just next door. With Casual Leopard, Hallsworth brings a fresh, relaxed energy to the neighbourhood — blending bold flavours, creative cocktails and laid-back charm in a space that feels both effortless and inviting.
From the outside, Casual Leopard may appear unassuming, but step inside and you’ll discover a treasure trove of charm. The interiors are stripped back and simple, letting the food and ambience do the talking. Think clean lines, soft lighting, and just enough edge to make it feel special without ever trying too hard. Out the back lies a lovely garden, perfect for lazy brunches or balmy evening catch-ups. But perhaps the real hidden gem is downstairs: a cosy, low-lit basement that’s just crying out for live music nights and intimate gatherings.
Of course, while the space is a vibe in itself, it’s the food that truly steals the show. We kicked things off with the pickle chips — crisp, tangy and perfectly paired with a dollop of crème fraîche. From there, the baby spinach salad delivered a masterclass in balance: salty parmesan, earthy miso, a zing of lemon juice, and just a whisper of truffle oil to bring it all together.
Then came the smoked lamb kofta, served on a bed of hot buttered cous cous, laced with a punchy harissa dressing, and accompanied by grilled yogurt bread — soft, smoky, and moreish. It was rustic, comforting and elevated all at once.
But the standout dish for me? Without a doubt, the grilled jumbo prawns, swimming in a spicy lemon garlic butter that was so addictive I found myself mopping up every last drop with whatever bread I could find. Juicy, fiery and decadent — I’d come back for those alone.
The drinks menu is just as inventive as the food, with a cocktail list that’s anything but ordinary. Every drink we tried was beautifully balanced and thoughtfully presented, but the star of the show was the Aunty Binny — a bold yet smooth concoction of Jack Daniels, honey, yuzu purée, Grand Marnier, lime and angostura bitters. It was zesty, warming, and dangerously drinkable.
Casual Leopard feels like the kind of place that locals will come to love, and others will travel to visit — not just for its food and drinks, but for the atmosphere it brings. It’s a neighbourhood spot with real soul, the kind of hangout that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon something special. Whether you’re after a lazy lunch, a romantic dinner, or late-night cocktails with friends, Casual Leopard has you covered.
