Easter Bunny Cracks as Eggflation Rips a 3,000-Tonne Hole in UK Baskets

Easter Bunny’s load looks a little lighter this year, as rising prices and shrinking chocolate leave Britain’s Easter hauls smaller and wallets emptier. Coined “Eggflation,” the UK is set to miss out on a staggering 3,000 tonnes of chocolate this Easter², leaving families wishing for more treats.

To keep Easter celebrations sweet, confectionery brand Bebeto has unveiled “Britain’s biggest sweet egg” – a giant creation hand-crafted from 3,000 sweets, symbolising the estimated tonnes of chocolate lost to “eggflation” this year.

To combat a 9.7% surge in chocolate costs⁴ and the sting of shrinking treats impacting shoppers nationwide, Bebeto is providing sweet relief with free ‘Eggflation Relief’ packs, helping families top up their baskets without compromising on Easter joy.

The squeeze is being widely felt across the nation: new research of 2,000 UK adults reveals 59% grow bitter over rising costs, while 52% have noticed their Easter treats shrinking before their eyes. In total, Brits are estimated to be missing out on 3,000 tonnes of chocolate this season² – roughly the weight of 200 London double-decker buses.

Refusing to let “Eggflation” ruin the fun, Brits are already hopping into new ways to enjoy the season by swapping shrinking chocolate for fun alternatives. Almost half (47%) now agree that sweets are just as good a treat as chocolate for Easter¹, and nearly a third (32%) are willing to swap traditional chocolate eggs for alternative sweet treats completely¹.
