New art installation – Granary Square Christmas tree

Christmas Tree by David Batchelor, Granary Square, King’s Cross

Keeping in yuletide tradition of presenting the unconventional, from raving laser projections to a giant illuminated melting ‘ice cube’, for the festive this season Kings Cross’s Christmas tree will be another must-see experience.

Set against the backdrop of the redeveloped Granary industrial building and the banks of the Regents canal, the sculptural structure is a fitting testament to the areas industrial past and present day creative hub.

The commissioned artist David Batchelor, known for his love of colour, use of industrial materials and geometry, has created an alternative take to the traditional Christmas tree. His striking 13.5 metre high installation uses scaffolding and LED lights to blend into the urban landscape by day, but at night when the area is alive with nighttime activity, it dramatically transforms itself into an explosion of florescent light. Its rigid structure softened as it sits beautifully juxtaposed next to the fluid multi-coloured animated display created by the popular fountains.

If you can pull yourself away from trying to capture the perfect Instagram photo, there is plenty more to keep you occupied and entertained. There will be a packed programme of seasonal activities taking place in and around Granary Square transforming the area into an enchanting winter wonderland, with Christmas market pop ups galore to get you into the festive mood.

Shop till you drop at Coal Drops Yard, amidst a florescent magical scene decorated with colourful-flocked trees and multi coloured illuminations inspired by the breathtaking Northern Lights. Visitors can try their hand at creating unique personalised gifts at retailer led workshops from festive herb drinks master classes, bauble marbling, recycled jewellery making, wrapping paper print and cracker and piñata making workshops, with proceeds going to Shelter.

Other exciting events include a lively Mexican Christmas market and Christmas under the Canopy where you can shop for unique edible and non edible artisan gifts, immerse yourself in carol singing, live bands and jazz concerts while tucking into festive foods and winter warmers. A go to family friendly destination to eat, drink, shop and be merry. Ps look out for Santa’s Reindeer!
