On Guard for an Afternoon Tea fit for a Queen

It’s well known as Brits we are in love with a spot of afternoon tea. For me it’s the sense of tradition with a bit of pomp thrown in. From the crisp white table cloths to the big silver tea pots, quintessential china cups and cake stands. There’s no chance of finding the common tea bag here it’s real leaves and a silver tea strainer at the ready.

The Royal HorseGuards Hotel formally the HQ of the secret service in WW1 is just steps away from the Horseguards barracks and prides itself on its Afternoon Tea. As a member of the invitation only UK Tea Guild it’s safe to say they know their tea.image4

So after taking my seat in the sumptuous lounge it was time to finally eat cake. To start I choose my favourite Earl Grey Sapphire tea to accompany my cake stand of goodies. As expected there was the obligatory crustless sandwiches with a couple of quirky swerve balls.

I liked the choux bun filled with egg mayo but I wasn’t keen on the Mini shredded Duck burger it just looked odd on the stand and was extremely messy to eat, not something you want whilst trying to look sophisticated. Moving swiftly onto the cake I was more than happy with macaroons and an assortment of classic miniatures from the dark chocolate torte to an lemon sponge with a lovely chilled glass of Taittinger Champagne.

So after a good hour ploughing through the contents of the cake stand and 2 pots of Tea, there was still the home made scones to come served with Cornwall’s best thick clotted cream and strawberry jam. It was also time to try another tea from their extensive list of both black white and herbal teas. This time I plumped for the Spiced Chai as I battled to spread the extra thick cream on my first scone.

Nearly 2 hours later I admitted defeat with not an inch of space for one more bite of my delicious scones, Tea Time for me was well and truly over. Royal HorseGuards Hotel 1 totally stuffed ONINLondon reporter.
