Onin.London Visits Citizen M In New York

Situated in Bowery, just a short walk from Chinatown and Little Italy, CitizenM Bowery is the perfect place to rest your head after a day of touristing around Manhattan.

From check in to checkout, we had a really seamless experience. On arrival, guests can be in control of their check in, with computers set up to check yourself in and create your own room key. Hotel staff were always on hand to help out, in case of any tech failures or anyone who prefer to check in and out with a member of the team.

One of CitizenM’s USPs is that every room is the same, so there’s no tricky decisions of which room to choose. All rooms are designed for two adults with a XL bed, power shower, and free WiFi. Rooms controls can all be found on an Ipad, so you can control your lighting, temperature, tv and audio controls without having to leave the comfort of your bed. We had a couple of issues connecting to Netflix, but the team were at the end of the phone and able to troubleshoot and fix it for us within minutes.

The highlight of the hotel is definitely the rooftop bar, CloudM. With almost 360 views of the city, we spent the evening basking in the sunshine with a cocktail and some nibbles – meatballs, chicken skewers and chips and dips. We tried a couple of their signature cocktails and I’d recommend It Wasn’t Me and Troubled Waters, for something a bit stronger.

There are quirky touches of artwork and statues throughout the hotel, giving it a really cool vibe and lots of Instagrammable spots as you walk around. To reflect the diversity of the hotel’s location, CitizenM is also home to a small exhibition of artwork and graffiti by local artists (known as the Museum of Street Art), which is open for all hotel guests to visit.

After a walk around the local area, which I wasn’t a huge fan of (I’m more a Midtown girl), we relaxed into the most comfortable bed and binge watched Netflix. Safe to say that I was really tempted to cancel our day of exploring the next day to spend the day in bed as it was so comfortable!

On our last morning, we had a buffet breakfast before heading to Brooklyn for the day. Breakfast included fresh pastries, cereals and hot food: sausages, eggs and more-ish breakfast potatoes.

Check out was just a seamless as check in, and the hotel team kindly looked after our suitcases as we went out to explore for the day. With time to kill in between our day of touristing and our flight, we made the most of CitizenM’s communal areas, where several guests were sitting and working, watching tv or playing chess (amongst other things).

CitizenM has two hotels in Manhattan – the one we stayed at in Bowery and one by Times Square. For visitors to the Big Apple with not too much luggage and looking for a modern hotel with cool communal areas – this is definitely the hotel brand for you!
