OPPO Reno UK Launch review and ICC Cricket world cup sponsorship

OPPO’s passion in research and development has escalated them to one of the top 4 smartphone brands in the world. Yesterday’s event showcased why, with the UK launch event of their new Reno smartphone series and announcement of their sponsorship of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. This kicks off their global Be a Shot Maker campaign to utilise the sports performance of the Reno series to capture every shot of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 around the world.

OPPO showcased the 3 models in the Reno series: Reno 5G, Reno 10x Zoom and Reno available in Ocean Green and Jet Black. Reno 5G is in partnership with EE to be the first to bring 5G technology to Europe and make connectivity seamless for live streaming sport and gaming. Reno 10x Zoom is bringing the telescopic lens technology to the palm of your hand with glorious quality that will make every seat in the ground feel like you are on the pitch. The Reno may not have the 10x Zoom or 5G capabilities but provides all the performance with the bezel-less screen and pivot rising selfie camera for a budget phone price.

The OPPO Reno 5G and Reno 10x Zoom feature a 6.6-inch OLED screen (6.4-inch screen for Reno), with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels, an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and an extremely thin bezel. These design features provide a screen-to-body ratio of up to 93.1%, completely notch-less. To create this new panoramic screen, OPPO pushed the boundaries in design to provide users with stunning visuals and the best viewing experience while watching videos, playing games or taking photos.

Alen Wu, OPPO President of International Business commented: “As a longstanding ICC global partner, we are proud to be a part of the Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 and our campaign is the perfect expression of OPPO’s creativity and spirt. Be a Shot Maker is about risk-taking and taking chances – as a sportsperson, as a photographer and as a fan, and we believe that our new range of devices will take fan-generated content to new heights. OPPO Reno is an integral part of our global growth strategy and serves as the catalyst for the future of OPPO’s smartphone development.”

Sharon Meadows, Director of Devices, Partnerships & Business Development, EE, said: “EE customers with an OPPO Reno 5G will be able to get the most from our new super-fast, high capacity 5G network. Whether they are watching high definition video, trying out AR experiences or gaming with their friends, the Reno 5G will let them tap into the game-changing speeds and connectivity that 5G will bring.”

Post-presentation we were able to get hands on with the devices playing with the pivot-rising camera plus the 10x Hybrid zoom and this was an impressive smartphone. It felt great in the hand and looked amazing with no notch or bezel crowding the front of the phone. The pivot-rising camera is instantaneous once the camera is put in selfie mode and returns just as fast post snap. The photo capabilities on the Reno 10x Zoom were remarkable as a test column allowed us to take a regular shot and then zoom in 10x to details that were barely visible even with the human eye. This was my favourite feature of the whole Reno series as zoom is always something that jeopardises the perfect shot in most current smartphones.

Aside from all the mind-boggling features on the Reno series the event also had Sir Alastair Cook and England Vice-Captain Jos Buttler in attendance to promote the partnership between OPPO and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Guests were able to grab photos and chat with these 2 legends of the sport of cricket and discuss the upcoming tournament.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a coaching session in the nets with Jos Buttler and hit an over on the batting simulator technology BatFast. To blow my own horn I finished the over with 12 runs, one more run than the highest English Test run scorer of all time, Sir AlastairCook. Pretty happy with that.

The OPPO Reno handset retails at £499 and the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom, is priced at £699. Both devices areavailable to pre-order with Carphone Warehouse from today and will be on sale in store and online from 5th June for Reno and 12th June for Reno 10x Zoom. The Reno 5G in ocean green will be available with EE, pricing and availability will be announced very shortly.
