Review: Ma Petite Jamaica Camden

Camden has officially now become my hang out space, with a little taste of Jamaica.

Ma Petite Jamaica has been open on Iverness Street for just over a month and true to its name, it has brought a little bit of the Caribbean to Camden Town. Ma Petite Jamaica is London’s first Caribbean diner and it is offering a much needed bit of warmth to starve off the winter blues. Inside the palm trees, bright painted walls and the waiting staff in colourful shirts instantly took me back to my holiday in Jamaica in August. You know its a great place to hangout when a group of friends have brought a board game with them to dinner. The atmosphere was perfect for a chilled night out with friends, or a relaxed date with that special person.

Let’s get to the food! We had for a starter (little dish) Rasta Salad (lettuce, tomatoes, pineapples, avocado) with ackee and salt fish. Let me warn you when the menu says little dish thats exactly what it means, we assumed it meant starters. The Rasta salad was beautiful on the eye, it had colours of red, green and yellow and the flavours were amazing, I honestly could have just eaten that and been satisfied. The ackee and salt fish arrived and they were in dumplings, just how I like it, I hate when Caribbean food is watered down, but this was not, the ackee and salt fish had a little bit of spice and the dumplings were sweet and tasty just how my aunty used to make.

We had the curry goat roti, with macaroni and cheese and a side of callaloo (greens). YUM YUM YUM! I can’t even go into the flavours, let just say they were perfect and filling. I was so excited by my meal I had to take some home and yep I made that bad boy last two extra days. I always love when a good restaurant does takeaway, it always makes my heart smile. I could ramble on for ages about how good the food was, but I think a recommendation is way better. I would 100% get down to Ma Petite Jamaica you will not regret it and its a stone throw away from Camden tube, even more reason to gather your friends for a bit of Caribbean fun before Christmas.

I can guarantee that not only will you leave feeling happy, but your pocket will too. The food is great value and you can easily have a meal for under a tenner but if you choose to visit during the Ma Petite Jamaica Happy Hour, which runs daily from 5pm until 7pm. You can choose from a vibrant range of classic Caribbean cocktails including the mighty Mojito, cool Cuba Libres and a Jamaican Mule with a heck of a kick! You will also be able to find one of the most amazing ranges of rums in all of London any hour you happen to pop in. Well-established favourites like Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry sit alongside choice brands such as Blackwell Gold and Smith & Cross.
