River Bar Steak House and Grill Review

Located in a lovely 18th century bonded warehouse overlooking the river Cam, sits the River Bar Steak House and Grill. The restaurant is one of the dining areas available in The Varsity Hotel & Spa and did not disappoint.

On one of the hottest days London as seen this year, my friend and I travelled to Cambridge from London for the day to experience what the restaurant and the town had to offer.

The stroll throughout the town is beautiful. The historical buildings, the colleges and the canals all bring a sense of calm. Even with all the tourists, the beautiful weather brought out in droves.

After the 30 minute walk from the train station, we arrived at River Bar Steak House and Grill and
were extremely grateful for the bottle of Prosecco we received. It went down a treat… because really is there anything better than a cold class of bubbly on a hot day?

The menu at the River Bar Steak House and Grill is extensive and it was very difficult to decide what to have for our lunch! It all looked so good.

My friend and I decided to share a trip of starters including “Burrata with Cracked Black Pepper, Slow Roasted Tomato, Rocket and Aged Balsamic”, “Scallops servers in shells with herb garlic butter” and “Crab cakes with chipotle Mayo”.

The Scallops were cooked to perfection in the aromatic garlic butter and were the favourite of the three.

My friend and I never turn down Lobster and with a few lobster dishes on the menu, we couldn’t say no. She chose the Lobster Mac & Cheese, while I went with the Whole Grilled Lobster with chips and salad. Now my friend’s main was phenomenal and everything was just perfect. Mine was just a little underwhelming. I think it was a little overdone but I must say I was very impressed with how every bit of Lobster meat was extracted from the shell. Gordon Ramsey would have been proud.

Despite feeling incredibly full at this stage, we managed to share a slice of cheesecake. It would have been rude not too.

While eating our meal, we enjoyed looking out at the beautiful river/canal and seeing punters meander lazily down in a punt. Staff were incredibly friendly and happy to talk to us during our stay. We really can’t thank them enough.

So next time you’re in Cambridge, visit the River Bar Steak House and Grill.
