OIL Reviews Sopwell House
Just 20 miles from central London, the historic city of St Albans offers the perfect combination of charm, culture, and countryside calm. Known for its Roman history, quaint streets, and striking Cathedral, this Hertfordshire gem is ideal for a day trip or a longer escape. Before checking into Sopwell House, I took the chance to explore the area, and it made my stay feel all the more special.
The town centre is as picturesque as it is lively, with cobbled streets, independent shops, and a warm community feel. I wandered through the bustling market, where stalls were brimming with everything from artisanal produce to antiques. The atmosphere had that perfect balance: lively but not overwhelming, traditional yet modern.
One of the highlights of St Albans is its Cathedral, a magnificent structure that has stood for over 1,000 years. The architecture is breathtaking, with its blend of Norman and Gothic design, and the peaceful interior invites quiet reflection. Just a short walk away lies Verulamium Park, built on the site of the ancient Roman city. The park is vast, with rolling greenery, a beautiful lake, and remnants of Roman walls and mosaics. Even on a drizzly day, it’s a place of calm, with swans gliding across the water and families enjoying the open space.
For a little indulgence before heading to Sopwell House, I stopped into Knoops, the artisan hot chocolate shop that has something of a cult following. With its menu offering a spectrum of cocoa percentages and flavour combinations, it was a sweet treat and a reminder of the town’s growing foodie reputation.
Arriving at Sopwell House, just a short distance from the city centre, felt like stepping into another world. The Georgian façade, the sweeping driveway, and the landscaped grounds gave an immediate sense of grandeur. Inside, the décor was both striking and elegant: a careful blend of modern sophistication and classic charm. Velvet furnishings, warm lighting, and artistic touches created a welcoming atmosphere, while the size of the property meant there was always space to find a quiet corner.
My room was a Chic Room and beautifully appointed, offering both style and comfort in equal measure. The décor leaned into understated elegance, with neutral tones, soft textures, and thoughtful design. The highlight was undoubtedly the bed—plush, deep, and supremely comfortable, the kind you melt into and never want to leave. It promised (and delivered) a perfect night’s sleep.

The Cottonmill Spa & The Club at Cottonmill
No visit to Sopwell House is complete without experiencing the Cottonmill Spa and, if you’re fortunate enough, The Club at Cottonmill, the hotel’s exclusive, premium spa.
The Club at Cottonmill is a sanctuary within a sanctuary. Even in the rain, the outdoor pool was mesmerising. Reclining in the steaming water as raindrops pattered on the surface was unexpectedly magical, adding to the atmosphere of peace and connection with nature.
Inside, the spa facilities were just as impressive. I made the most of the steam and sauna rooms, each distinct in design and effect. The hydrotherapy pool was perfect for easing tired muscles, and it was easy to drift into a timeless rhythm, moving from one space to the next.

The standout of my visit was a massage. My therapist’s expertise was evident in every movement, firm yet soothing, leaving me completely relaxed and tension-free. Later, I returned to enjoy one of the outdoor jacuzzis. As the sun set, the sky transformed into a wash of pinks and purples. Watching the colours deepen while enveloped in warm bubbles was one of those rare, perfect moments where everything slows down and you feel truly at peace.
Even beyond the spa, Sopwell House caters to wellness lovers, with a well-equipped gym and luxurious changing rooms that felt more like a high-end club than a hotel facility.

Dinner at The Brasserie
After my spa experience, I returned to my room to prepare for dinner at The Brasserie. The restaurant strikes the right balance between relaxed and refined, creating an atmosphere where you feel comfortable yet cared for. I began the evening with a glass of red wine, chosen with the guidance of the team, whose recommendation was spot-on.
For starters, I had scallops with garlic and bacon crumb. They were plump, buttery, and perfectly seared, with the bacon crumb adding a savoury crunch that elevated the dish.
The main course was a fillet steak with peppercorn sauce, accompanied by fries and green beans with almonds. The steak was cooked to perfection, medium rare, tender, and cutting like butter. The peppercorn sauce provided a salty, tangy kick that paired beautifully with the richness of the beef. The sides, simple in theory, were executed brilliantly: crispy fries and crisp, fresh beans with a nutty edge.

For dessert, I opted for a cheese selection with a glass of ruby Port. The variety of cheeses offered a journey of flavour and texture, and the port added depth and warmth, rounding out the meal perfectly.
Full and content, I rolled into bed and enjoyed one of the best sleeps I’ve had in a long time. The next morning, breakfast did not disappoint. Far from the stodgy buffets so common in hotels, Sopwell House’s offering was fresh, well-cooked, and delicious. From eggs made to order to flaky pastries, it was a spread that showed care and quality.
After a leisurely morning working from my room, finding it as suitable for productivity as it was for relaxation, I had a light lunch in the Conservatory Bar: a fresh chicken Caesar salad that was crisp, balanced, and satisfying. Dining in the Conservatory Bar, with its abundance of natural light and views over the gardens, was a pleasure in itself.
Checking out was smooth and efficient, and within minutes I was in an Uber heading to the station. The journey back to London was swift—a 35-minute train to King’s Cross—and I found myself already reminiscing about the tranquillity of my stay.
Sopwell House is a destination that offers a complete experience. The beautiful décor, the plush rooms, the exceptional spa, and the outstanding dining all combine to create something unforgettable. But it’s also the context that makes it shine: being able to pair a stay with the history, charm, and character of St Albans adds a unique richness.
Whether you’re escaping London for a romantic weekend, celebrating a special occasion, or simply craving some tranquillity, Sopwell House delivers everything you could want, and more. I’ll be back that’s for sure!
