The Clubhouse Dorset

We went to The Clubhouse just after Christmas on a really lovely winter’s day – cold but bright, with proper sunshine. We took the dog for a walk first, making the most of the crisp air, and then headed over for lunch feeling pleasantly windswept and very ready to eat.

Despite it being winter, the atmosphere was wonderfully lively. We chose to sit outside in their covered outbuilding, which turned out to be a great decision. It was nicely heated and completely comfortable, managing to feel cosy while still letting in plenty of light. Sun streamed through, dogs dozed at their owners’ feet, and there was an easy, relaxed buzz that instantly made us feel welcome. It’s genuinely dog-friendly without feeling chaotic.

The food was excellent from start to finish. We began with scallops that were beautifully cooked – sweet, tender and confident in their simplicity, letting the quality of the seafood do all the work. The crab macaroni and cheese was another highlight: generous, indulgent and packed with flavour, striking that perfect balance between comfort food and something a bit special.

For mains, the fish and chips were exactly what you want them to be. The fish was fresh and flaky inside a crisp, well-seasoned batter, with proper chips alongside – not an afterthought, but clearly given the same care. The portions were enormous – as they should be beside the seaside. The catch of the day was equally impressive and a great reminder of how well The Clubhouse does local seafood without overcomplicating things.

The drinks were just as enjoyable. Cocktails were well made and thoughtfully balanced, and the Negroni in particular was satisfyingly punchy. It felt especially good on a bright winter afternoon. Finishing with a lovely glass of Baileys felt indulgent and festive, and was the perfect way to round things off.

What really tied the whole experience together was the staff. Everyone we encountered was genuinely friendly, relaxed and attentive without ever being overbearing. Service felt warm and natural, and there was a real sense that they want you to enjoy your time there. It was clear the team enjoyed their jobs and thrived from customer interaction (as well as with the pooch’s).

Between the streaming sunshine, the abundance of happy dogs, the excellent food and drink, and the genuinely welcoming service, our visit to The Clubhouse was one of those meals that stays with you. It’s an easy place to settle into and an even easier one to recommend – whether you’re fresh from a coastal walk or simply looking for somewhere reliably good to eat and drink in Dorset.
