The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy Experience Review

On Tuesday 23rd December, I embarked on an adventure to Riverside Studios to participate in The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy experience. I took my dad who is a huge fan of the book, movie and tv series, so he was looking forward to it but this was his first experience into a fully immersive play.

Like us until the 15th February, you can join Arthur Dent, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Fenchurch and the most unlikely crew in the history of galactic adventure as they escape the destruction of Earth and set out on a quest to uncover the mysteries of Life, the Universe and Everything, armed with little more than a towel and one VERY depressed robot.

I don’t want to give too much away but your adventure starts in a “pub” and moves from there  to spaceships to alien planets across the whole of Riverside Studios, room to room. It’s pretty cool and makes the experience more interactive as we encountered paranoid androids, all knowing AIs, exotic aliens and are offered the chance to find their own ultimate meaning (which may or may not be 42).

As I said before, the evening begins in a rather unusual pub, where guests can settle in with a drink before being swept into a story filled with spectacle and cosmic mischief. We got the chance to speak to the characters and enjoy the cocktail as part of the VIP experience and from there, you are ushered further into the adventure as we hitched a ride on a passing spaceship, encountered interdimensional mice, and uncovered the secrets of the universe in the most absurd and entertaining ways imaginable.

All the actors were great, never breaking character and had us laughing throughout the entire performance. My dad even got involved talking to the actors and he’s really not one to do this at all!

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy experience features a mix of pre-recorded celebrity voices and live performers including well-loved British talent including actor and comedian Sanjeev Bhaskar as the voice of Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz, the infamous alien bureaucrat with a mission to destroy the Earth. Lenora Crichlow will voice Tricia McMillian, also known as Trillian, while journalist Samira Ahmed will appear as a newsreader reporting on the planet’s impending doom. BAFTA nominee Tamsin Greig will be the voice of The Guide, the ever-present source of wisdom and guidance throughout the story.

Accompanying the line-up of celebrity voices includes a stellar cast of live actors including Benjamin Durham (101 Dalmatians, UK Tour) and Robert Thompson (Unforgivable, ITV) as Arthur Dent, Oliver Britten (Down Cemetery Road, Apple TV+) and Matt Colyer (Phantom Peak) as Ford Prefect, Kat Johns-Burke (Peaky Blinders: The Rise) as Fenchurch, Andrew Evans (The Polar Express) as Marvin the Paranoid Android, Lee VG (Only Fools and Horses: The Musical, Theatre Royal Haymarket) as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Richard Costello (Death of England, National Theatre) as Slartibartfast, Angelis Hunt (TINA: The Tina Turner Musical, Aldwychand Aya Elmansouri (Cinderella, Gatehouse) as Humma Kavula, Briony Scarlett as Eccentrica Gallumbits and Tom Bowen as Wowbagger, with Alex Anthony Fevrier(Jesus Christ Superstar, Watermill) and Tamara Saffir (Grease, Secret Cinema).

There was a lot more singing in the show than what I was expecting but it just added to the show and was fun and magical. It definitely didn’t have us asking “what’s going on” or feeling “crazy”.

Overall we throughly enjoyed the show, the VIP ticket is definitely worth it for the added security of reserved seats, an exclusive deck of playing cards, early entry and a delicious cocktail.
