Stylish Cocktails at Three Sheets Soho
Acclaimed Dalston bar Three Sheets offers just as much impact in the West End
If you haven’t heard of Three Sheets, well, have you been living under a rock? It’s a tale as old as time that most of London’s GREAT cocktail bars originated from, or are situated in East London. I don’t write the rules, I just write them here.
So, when an institution decides to appeal to the masses with a move to W1, alongside its great original premises, we have to admire the kahunas. It’s not easy to make it big in Soho, after all… cocktails are a dime a dozen. But, we’re really into Three Sheets Soho.
Brothers Max & Noel Venning originated the concept, and within a few years, it was quickly recognised on lists such as The World’s 50 Best and Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards.
The bar is fundamentally known for their clean and elegant cocktails with harmonious complexity, but what I really respected was the boldness and bravery to stray from the norm. Whilst we all love the classics, isn’t it just a bit boring? This place does classics, by name, but not by pour – the ingredients transcend the drinks into the next realm.
I’m here to tell you, these mixologists are really revolutionising mixology. On top of that, they have banter and personality and are truly embodying a cocktail bar’s main purpose – a space to get lost, enjoy good drinks and laugh and joke with your bartender.
Onto the drinks. We tried a fair few, when in Rome and all, and loved the Champagne Breakfast – a cheeky blend of Buttered Belvedere, Caramelised Brioche with Moet and Chandon – truly sophisticated. I liked the Paloma that featured Verbena Berry, and the twist on a classic vodka, lime and soda. They somehow took a basic (AF) cocktail (is it even a cocktail?) to the absolute next level.
Now the true test. I am the world’s biggest Dirty Martini fan and my toes curl up in excitement when I see one on the menu. This one specifically had Belvedere (of course), mixed with Koseret Tea, Olive Oil, Picpoul and Sea Salt. Wow. No more words need be said… one of the best I’ve had in London.
Whilst we’re not here necessarily for the food, I was really impressed by the selection. Maldon Oysters (a perfect accompaniment to that martini), Mustard Chips which are utterly moreish and a beautiful Lobster Roll – brioche stuffed to the brim with Cornish Lobster, Aioli, Celery, Chives and Butter Lettuce. More decidedly tasty small plates are on offer. It’s the ideal spot for a first date, mate date or after work haunt with friends. I even took my grandma after forcing her on several rides at Winter Wonderland which says a lot more about me than the bar.
The actual bar is warm and cosy with dark undertones and curved lines. Hand-upholstered dark-green leather curved banquettes sit right of the centrepiece Calcutta marble-topped bar with leather-upholstered stools. Towards the back of the bar, an original skylight is positioned overhead the intimate round tables and there’s a fully retractable facade that will open up onto the street during the summer months. Gosh I can only imagine the summer menu! I must come back…
This is a naughty cocktail bar… just as all Soho institutions should be. Please book a table.
