Volta do Mar: A Sun-Soaked Slice of Portugal in the Heart of Chelsea

Tucked away just off the King’s Road, Volta do Mar is a warm and welcoming gem that brings the soul of Portuguese cuisine to Chelsea, with flair, flavour, and a beautifully sunny terrace that feels like the ultimate sun trap in the area. Whether you’re after an al-fresco lunch, a romantic dinner, or cocktails with friends, this hidden haven is a must-visit — and quite possibly the sunniest terrace in Chelsea, catching golden rays well into the evening.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Simon and Isabel, Volta do Mar is the product of years spent exploring their shared Portuguese heritage through travel and food. Their journey led to the creation of a restaurant that celebrates the rich, globally-influenced culinary traditions of Portugal, spanning the country’s former trade routes to Brazil, Goa, Macau, and beyond. The result is a menu that feels both nostalgic and excitingly adventurous.

Step inside and you’re greeted by interiors that are both slick and intimate — elegant without being fussy, with plenty of thoughtful touches that make the space ideal for date nights – such as a great wine wall. The team, much like the food, radiates warmth. Service is attentive, friendly, and unpretentious — a feature that makes dining here feel truly personal.

Cocktails at Volta do Mar are a particular highlight. The bar team have clearly embraced seasonality with flair. A Blueberry Caipirinha delivered a burst of tart freshness balanced by mellow rum, while a Watermelon Martini was every bit as refreshing and summery as you’d hope — vibrant, light, and dangerously easy to drink.

To start, we sampled a selection of small plates. The Chorizo & Smoked Ham Hock Croquettes, delivered bold, meaty flavours. Though the croquettes were slightly drier than my taste loves, they were still rich and moreish. A special of pan-fried clams really stood out — salty, tender, and expertly cooked, they captured the essence of seaside dining.

For mains, the Macanese Pork Chop was a showstopper: visually striking with its generous portion and beautifully charred edges, it was juicy and deeply flavoured. The Piri Piri Chicken was another winner — the spice level on the sauce could have been bolder, but the chicken itself was cooked to absolute perfection. Crispy fries on the side rounded things off with satisfying crunch.

No visit would be complete without trying the Pastel de Nata, and Volta do Mar’s is undoubtedly one of the finest you’ll find in London. Buttery, flaky pastry encases a silky custard that hits that sweet spot between rich and delicate.

Volta do Mar succeeds in offering more than just a meal — it’s a culinary voyage that honours Portugal’s past while embracing London’s present. With a menu full of bold flavours, a terrace that captures the very best of the British sun, and a team that genuinely makes you feel at home, this Chelsea gem is a true return from the sea — and one you’ll want to keep coming back to.
