Aladdin Pantomime Review
If you find yourself just northwest of London this festive season, Watford’s Palace Theatre is definitely worth a visit. Their current performance, the popular Pantomime Aladdin, is sure to entertain all members of the family.
The performance follows the story of a poor young man, Aladdin, son of the widowed laundress Widow Twanky (played by the well-loved Dame Terence Frisch) who meets Princess Perfect Rose by chance and tries to disguise himself as a rich prince in the hopes of being chosen as her future husband. Of course the journey is made challenging by the hilarious baddie Abanazer who tries to trick and thwart Aladdin.
Probably the best part of the show is all the contemporary music interspersed throughout the modern retelling of a classic story. The special effects for Aladdin’s magic carpet are also quite impressive. While some of the more slapstick comedy (super soakers come to mind!) is geared towards younger audiences, there are some more subtle adult jokes which are not to be missed.
The story is set in Ancient Wat-a-Ford which is a rather chaotic mix of Arabia, China and possibly our very own Watford, but otherwise it is easy and enjoyable to follow. This pantomime performance runs until Tuesday 31st December at Watford Palace Theatre.
Be sure to check back periodically as this venue offers a multitude of entertainment throughout the year from plays to musical tribute acts. It is just minutes away from Watford High Street station and a short train journey from central London.
