Barrafina Borough Yards

Nestled next to the vibrant and bustling Borough Market, Barrafina Borough Yards offers a sophisticated yet lively dining experience, blending modern elegance with the charm of its market-side location. From the moment you step inside, you’re immediately enveloped in a buzzing atmosphere, one that pulses with energy, yet feels refined and warm. This combination makes it a perfect spot for both casual dinners and celebratory meals alike. We went on a Sunday and it was the perfect reprieve from heavy roast dinners.

As you settle into the space, it’s hard to ignore the blend of contemporary design and rustic Spanish influences. The sleek, minimalist interior, with its wood accents and open kitchen, creates a sense of intimacy, while the hum of conversation and clinking glasses adds an undeniable vibrancy to the atmosphere. We loved the open kitchen! Watching the chef curate all the dishes in the most relaxed manner possible. The proximity to Borough Market adds an extra layer of excitement, giving you a true sense of the area’s culinary heartbeat.

We began our lunch with a fantastic Negroni—a perfectly balanced cocktail. The drink was sharp yet smooth, a refreshing prelude to the bold flavours that were to follow. Pairing this with a glass of Spanish wine elevated the entire experience, as it seamlessly complemented the rich, savoury dishes we were about to indulge in.

The first dish to arrive was the Classic Tortilla—a beloved Spanish staple done to perfection – runny in the middle. This thick, comforting dish of tender potatoes and eggs, bound together in a rich, velvety texture, was a reminder of the simple yet extraordinary flavours that Spanish cuisine does so well. It was expertly cooked, with a golden, slightly crispy exterior and a soft, gooey interior that melted in the mouth.

Next, the Ham Croquetas arrived, golden-brown and crisp on the outside, with a creamy, indulgent filling. The Pimientos de Padrón—small, tender green peppers lightly charred and drizzled with sea salt—were a delicious, addictive snack. Some were delightfully mild, while others packed a surprise punch of heat, creating a playful and engaging dish that kept us on our toes.

Then came the Ox Cheek Fritters. These little bites of indulgence were as good as they sounded —crispy on the outside and meltingly tender on the inside with pulled ox cheek. The deep, savoury flavors of the ox cheek shone through, enhanced by the light batter that encased them, making each bite incredibly satisfying.

However, the standout of the evening was the White Asparagus with Vinagreta. Such a simple dish, but this dish was, without a doubt, the best thing I’ve eaten this year. The asparagus was tender and perfectly cooked, with a subtle, pickled flavour that paired beautifully with the tangy, herby vinaigrette. The combination of textures and colours was nothing short of magical, showcasing Barrafina’s ability to elevate even the most simple ingredients.

Finally, we were treated to the Daily Special of Sole in Garlic Butter, which was the perfect way to end our meal. The fish was delicate and light, its natural sweetness enhanced by the rich, aromatic garlic butter. It was a dish that felt both indulgent and refined, a testament to the kitchen’s ability to balance flavours. Being seated at the counter made us hungry for more as we watched each dish be prepared. But alas, we were full!

Dining at Barrafina Borough Yards was an unforgettable experience. The combination of exquisite food, exceptional service, and a buzzing yet elegant atmosphere makes it a must-visit for anyone in London. Whether you’re a fan of classic Spanish tapas or looking for something new and exciting, Barrafina delivers with every bite.
