Sunday Lunch at Emberwood at The Francis Hotel, Bath
There is something delightfully British about settling down to a Sunday roast on one of the first truly warm days of the year, and our recent lunch at Emberwood, the stylish brasserie inside Bath’s Francis Hotel, felt like the perfect way to spend a balmy afternoon. Despite the sunshine tempting people outdoors, the elegant dining room was packed, a clear indication that Emberwood has quickly become one of Bath’s most sought-after tables. The lively atmosphere, coupled with the restaurant’s handsome Georgian surroundings and open-fire cooking concept, created an immediate sense of occasion. Inspired by fire-led British cooking and seasonal local produce, Emberwood has rapidly established itself as a standout addition to Bath’s dining scene.
We began with two excellent starters. The coal-roasted scallops were beautifully cooked, sweet and delicate, enhanced rather than overwhelmed by their accompaniments. Alongside them, the crab on toast which was generous – fresh-tasting crab piled onto perfectly crisp toast – with enough richness to feel luxurious.
A refreshing pickle plate followed, which is always an inspired choice between courses. Almost a palate cleanser.
The centrepiece of our lunch was the Sunday roast saddle of lamb. Presented with all the traditional trimmings, it was a masterclass in how this British tradition should be done well. The lamb itself was tender, succulent and deeply flavourful, cooked with precision and served in generous slices. Towering Yorkshire puddings arrived gloriously crisp on the outside while remaining light and airy within. The accompanying vegetables were equally impressive: sweet braised red cabbage, perfectly cooked carrots and tender greens added colour and balance to the plate.
Particular praise must go to the roast potatoes, which achieved that elusive combination of crunchy, golden exteriors and fluffy interiors. Equally memorable was the cauliflower cheese, rich and comforting without becoming overly heavy. Emberwood’s menus celebrate seasonal produce and sharing-style generosity.

Just when we thought we could eat no more, dessert arrived in perhaps the most charming way imaginable: via Emberwood’s now-signature dessert trolley. The theatrical flourish added a sense of nostalgia and fun to the end of the meal. We selected a strawberry and white chocolate cake, which was light, summery and beautifully balanced, alongside a raspberry choux bun and delicate macaroon. The fresh fruit flavours felt perfectly suited to the warm weather and provided a graceful conclusion to a richly satisfying lunch.
