Mr Miyagi, Canterbury: a charming local Japanese restaurant with seriously big flavours

Tucked away in Canterbury, Mr Miyagi is the kind of charming little local restaurant that doesn’t need extravagant interiors or unnecessary theatrics to make an impression. Instead, it lets the food do the talking – and with generous sushi platters, bold flavours and comforting Japanese classics, there’s plenty worth talking about.

The restaurant itself is intimate and welcoming, with a relaxed neighbourhood feel that makes it just as suited to a casual midweek dinner as it is to a leisurely evening over sushi and wine. There’s something immediately likeable about its simplicity. This isn’t a sprawling, glossy restaurant trying to be all things to all people; it feels personal, unpretentious and genuinely focused on serving good Japanese food.

We started with two bowls of miso soup, the ideal introduction to the meal: warming, savoury and deeply comforting. But it was the arrival of the sushi that really brought the table to life.

The spicy prawn roll delivered exactly what its name promised, combining a welcome kick of heat with the sweetness of the prawn, while the ten-piece nigiri selection was an impressive centrepiece. Beautifully presented and generous in size, it showcased a variety of fresh fish laid over neatly formed rice. The sushi platters here have real visual impact, making them particularly good for sharing – although you might not want to.

Beyond the sushi, Mr Miyagi does an equally good job with the Japanese comfort-food classics. The chicken katsu curry was everything you want from the dish: crisp, golden chicken paired with a rich, gently spiced curry sauce and rice.

The vegetable udon provided another comforting contrast, with thick, satisfyingly chewy noodles and plenty of vegetables. Simple dishes like this rely on balance and execution rather than bells and whistles, and Mr Miyagi delivers exactly that.

What makes this Canterbury restaurant stand out is its ability to deliver food with big ambition and impact. The flavours are bold, the portions generous and the sushi platters genuinely impressive.

For anyone searching for Japanese food in Canterbury, Mr Miyagi is a lovely local find: charming, relaxed and refreshingly unpretentious, with seriously good sushi at its heart. Sometimes the local restaurants make the biggest impression, and Mr Miyagi is a perfect example.
