Bayou Bar brings traditional New Orleans cooking to South London with a range of po’ boys (sandwiches), wings, and shellfish, which are the stars of the show this Mardi Gras!

It’s just to the left when you enter Tooting Broadway market. As it’s  in a a unit it’s dominated by the open kitchen and a long bar, which gives a really laid back vibe (there are some booths at the back if you’re in a group). You’re quickly greeted by friendly, genuine and engaging staff who are happy to explain whats good and how to eat it. This is food for people who really don’t mind getting their hands in the name of gustatory pleasure so you’ll need a napkin or two (finally, a restaurant that uses enough butter!).

I had a plate of the crawfish  simmered from very fresh in a traditional stock, which comes on the side with a cornbread. Also in the mix is some traditional french sausage, potato, and onion which a lot of depth of flavour and richness. The cornbread came crunchy on the outside soft in the centre which made it ideal. The crawfish (crayfish) are sourced locally from the river Lea, where they are plentiful so they are fresh and sustainable. The result was hands down the best thing I’ve eaten all week.

Not into shellfish? There’s chicken wings, and a variety of po’ boy sandwiches (meat subs in crusty baguette). For vegetarians there’s deep fried cauliflower- if you want that southern decadence without the meat.

The bar is fully stocked with a range of beers, wines and spirits and a couple of classic southern cocktails like the daiquiri.
