Chotto Matte Review

I’d always heard good things about Chotto Matte in Soho, so was very excited to be invited to review their Signature Sharing Menu (£80pp). Chotto Matte describes its vibe as Japanese-Peruvian fusion and when we arrived on a Thursday evening, the upstairs was buzzy with a really great atmosphere.

Their cocktail menu is made up of some really interesting twists on classic combinations and I ordered a Kakigori; a frozen cocktail with a blend of vodka, aperitif, lychee, yuzu and raspberry.

Then came the food: We started with a classic Miso Soup then were served Padron Peppers, which were drizzled with a salty miso sauce. The restaurant describes its cuisine as Nikkei and the Yellowtail Nikkei Sashimi and Nikkei Gyoza were perfect examples of this style of cooking.

Next up was the deliciously fresh Sato Maki, filled with sea bass, salmon tartare and romano pepper and the Crispy Squid Tempura. Just as I thought the food couldn’t get better, we were served Asado De Tira (slow-cooked braised beef short rib), which fell off the bone and a spicy Polly Anticucho, which was perfectly balance with the Sesame Soy Broccoli.

I’m normally too full to have dessert, but the Kuro Goma (Black Sesame) Ice Cream was too difficult to resist, and I’m so pleased I gave in. The soft ice cream was really light and was topped with toasted almonds and chocolate sauce; the perfect way to end the meal!

Both my friend and I had different dietary requirements and preferences, and the team at Chotto Matte couldn’t have been more helpful in providing food and drinks that matched our preferences perfectly.

The portions were great sizes and I’d recommend the Signature Sharing Menu as a great way to try a bit of everything!
