Exposure The Musical

The plot for Exposure The Musical – Life Through The Lens is ‘Young photographer Jimmy Tucker faces the biggest and most exciting challenge of his life when a stranger commissions him to find and shoot the seven deadly sins alive and kicking in modern London. But in a break-neck race through the night, a series of extraordinary encounters involving girlfriends, family history and the intoxicating cult of celebrity begin to reveal that there’s a whole lot more at stake than just money’. With this in mind, I naively went in expecting a comedy but the musical itself was a lot heavier and more serious than I predicted.

While the show is funny at times, there are too many themes so the musical has the tendency to become a bit muddled. To the point where the main plot of Jimmy trying to photograph the seven deadly sins in London doesn’t come about until the very end of Act One. It is at this point that the Second Act picks up momentum and becomes faster paced. With Act Two, opening on what I feel is the weakest number of the show ‘Miles Mason’, it’s all forgiven by Niamh Perry’s ‘My Last Goodbye’. This is definitely the highlight of the entire show. Niamh’s voice is just as outstanding as her red lipstick and the highlighter she wore during the performance and had me utterly memorised.

David Albury (Jimmy) in the lead role is gorgeous and manages to carry the show, despite having a poorly scripted and often clichéd book to work with. The fact that he’s shirtless throughout the majority of the show was icing on the cake as he is mighty fine. Actually I can’t find fault with the entire casting options, as the cast really were all fantastic and give it their all, so head on down to support them while you can.

It is a shame, Exposure The Musical – Life Through A Lens is getting bad reviews because the show isn’t all bad and does have a lot of potential. Using Getty Images of events and people that have shaped our world is inspiring and Lindon Barr’s choreography is something special. The costumes in ‘7even Deadly Sins’ are spectacular and this song is probably the funniest performance of the night.

This musical is really one that you have to see for yourself and make your own mind up about. The audience members I spoke to during interval and after the show had a variety of different options, but the majority all agreed ‘My Last Goodbye’ was the best part of the show. I know I’m hoping for a release of the soundtrack so I can listen to that song, along with ‘Rainmaker’ and ‘Access All Areas/Snap It’ over and over again.

Exposure The Musical – Life Through The Lens will be at the St James Theatre until the 27th of August 2016, so head on down and make your own decision.
