Lucky Voice Waterloo Review
Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Except where we are we can choose whatever music we want. That’s right- it’s karaoke time! On Wednesday ONIN checked out Lucky Voice’s new Waterloo venue.
Upon arrival, Lucky Voice’s friendly staff greeted us. The venue has space to mingle in the foyer which is decked out in blues, pink and light wood tones, but as we arrived right on time we were shown straight to our room. There’s comfortable seating around two sides with a couple of surface tops for food and drinks, and space under the screen for bags. Before leaving us, staff showed us how to search by song, artist or even specific lyrics, and how to add the song to either play next or add to queue.
Staff will take orders at this point, or at any time you can press a button and they’ll come to you. We had a round of Phil Raspberry Collins. This comprises stolichnaya vodka, chambord black raspberry liqueur, raspberry purée, sugar, lemon juice and soda. On a hot evening, this was a refreshing cocktail and a good one to ease into the evening. There’s 9 other cocktails available, all for £11.70. We loved the musical link to the cocktail names such as Purple Rain, Ziggy Stardust and Crazy in Love. There’s also wine, beer, cider, spirits, no and low alcohol and soft drinks available.
Now it was time to sing! There was an initial flurry of activity as we all tried to shout out or select favourite songs. The first few songs we all wanted to just share the mic around, and this continued pretty much throughout though it might be fun to have a singing competition next time. We sung everything from ABBA to Britney Spears to Coolio, from titles such as Baby Shark to Teenage Dirt Bag, karaoke classics like Mr Brightside, Barbie Girl and Wonderwall and many, many more. We lost count of the number of times we’d start laughing and lose our place. We were quite surprised with how fast some of the songs feel when you’re singing the whole song and not just the chorus. Of course, when we needed to remember song titles or artists our brains would freeze and we couldn’t remember and there’s very limited internet connection so our recommendation is to have some songs/artists you want to sing listed down.
If you’re feeling peckish there’s 6 pizzas, 4 tacos and 12 small plates to choose from, not to mention churros for dessert. The small plates offer a variety such as sliders, bao buns, nachos, shrimp and vegan cauliflower wings. We had a selection of mac and cheese bites, tiger fries, vegan kofta and chicken tenders. The chicken tenders came with mustard dipping sauce but were fairly average. The vegan koftas with mint chutney and coriander were a surprising success. I loved the mac and cheese bites with house made double cheese sauces and seasoned with crispy onions. We all really enjoyed the tiger fries- rosemary rock salted potato fries with sweet potato fries as they were hot on arrival and salty. One of my friends who is not into chips, declared that she really enjoyed them- high praise indeed.
If you’re worried about missing out on a last order whilst singing your heart out, don’t be, as staff come in for last orders 30minutes before the session end time. We were so delighted with this- time simply had flown by. We really had no idea we’d already been in the room for 90minutes. We’d recommend following the staff’s suggestion and choosing a final song as we still had so many that we had to only play a few moments then skip to the next track.
Lucky Voice has locations at Liverpool Street, Islington, Soho, Holborn, and their newest venue Waterloo. The soundproofed private karaoke rooms accommodate from 4-30 people per booking. Prices start at £8 off peak and £11 peak per person. Bookings are for a minimum of 2 hours.
We had a fabulous time letting our hair down and belting out some tunes.
