The Authentic Mayfair Indian Restaurant with Surprisingly Good Prices

Visit Manthan Mayfair for a Delicious Mid-Week Dinner

Just off the truly luxurious shopping district of Bond Street sits Manthan, From the outside it’s undeniably stylish and, upon entry, you’re welcomed into a dimly-lit and intimate dining room.

The restaurant, founded by Rohit Ghai and Abhishake Sangwan, offers up the finest Indian dishes. A fan of the cuisine, I was excited to try some new and exciting tastes of India. Being in Mayfair I suspected I’d recoil in horror at the menu prices, but no! Quite the opposite. The tasting menu sits at just £60.00 per person for six dishes, dal, rice and paratha. Meanwhile the vegetarian option is just £55.00. If you’re not a fan of tasting menus, curries start from an incredibly reasonable £12.00!

Suitably relaxed and relieved the guests around us were getting a good deal, we ordered some cocktails to start. There is an impressive selection of Indian-inspired drinks with modern twists. I opted for the Menaka which had hibiscus infused mezcal, Madagascar vanilla, El Jimador Tequila Blanco, white peach and jasmine soda. The mix was delicately refreshing, with an edge of smokiness from the mezcal.

With plenty of starter options, and again reasonably priced starting from just £8.00, there really is something for everyone here. I opted for the Scallops Amritsari which were deep fried in gram flour and carom seed, served with raw mango. Each little pop of flavour was divine, and the portion size was very generous. My guest enjoyed the Beef Stew Idiyappam which included string hoppers, flavours of Southern spice and coconut. The beef was tender and rich, with a hint of chilli.

For main courses, we were salivating at the rich curry smells wafting from the kitchen. I decided to go for a Jaffna Lamb Curry which was rich and saucy, served with curry leaf, black pepper and whole spices. We also had to try their Chicken Tikka Masala as a classic which had a real point of difference and kick thanks to the Kashmiri chilli.

The accompanying rice and bread dishes were super tasty, and we would recommend coconut lovers, or fans of peshwari naans, go for the Tawa Paratha which is a flatbread with a subtle tropical island flavour.

There’s an impressive wine list, with bottles from around the world. A glass of the Tempranillo is the perfect accompaniment to this rich menu, with a subtle sweetness that fits nicely on the palette. Service is truly excellent and attentive.

I think this is one of the best, and certainly one of the best value restaurants, I have been to in the Mayfair area. Perfect to visit after a day of lugging shopping around Oxford Circus, or for a long overdue catch up with friends.
