The newly-reopened Marquis of Wellington is taking Bermondsey by storm, with it’s cool decor, splashes of statement scrap metals, vintage school chairs, copper piping and exposed original brickwork. They offer handmade wood-fire pizzas throughout the week, and street food, on the weekends, where they have a different food trader come in to cook up a storm, confirmed vendors include Smokin’ Lotus and The Chip Club.

The Marquis of Wellington is located on the famous Bermondsey Beer Mile, we headed on down last week to try out their wood-fired pizzas, for starters we went for the Fior di latte mozzarella and sweet onion garlic bread and the San marzano tomato and grilled aubergines, garlic bread, finished off with parmegiano reggieno, we were pleasantly surprised to see how generous the size of the garlic bread was, they have a nice light base and the tomato and mozzarella was fresh and creamy, the grilled aubergine gave it a nice kick. You could easily order one portion to share between two people, however they are so tasty, you’re going to want to order a whole one for yourself.

For the pizza I went for the unusual one they had on offer: the sirloin steak pizza, which came with slices of tender beef, red onions and gorgonzola, the steak was juicy, and again the base was nice and light. My friend got the Salami pizza, slices of Veronetto salami, spicy nduja, parmesan and wild rocket, there was a nice richness and saltiness to the salami which was perfectly balanced with the other ingredients. There are 18 different pizza toppings to choose from, so you could create your own from their huge array of toppings.

For desert we shared the salted caramel chocolate fudge cake with ice cream, this by far is one of the best desserts I’ve had in a pub, it was nice and chocolatey with the salted caramel oozing out of it nicely, it was sweet and decadent, all that one could want from a dessert.

Marquis of Wellington, has a stand out manager, who is very passionate about the refurb and the future of the pub, they have pub quizzes once a week, with some little quirks, made up by the staff, like ‘which ever group can shout the loudest at the next people who walk’ will win a point. My sort of pub quiz…

As I left the Marquis of Wellington, I kept thinking i wish this was my local. Needless to say I’m fan!
