The People’s Revolt

TPR_HRP_logolockup_white_1600pxIn March 2017, Historic Royal Palaces and cutting edge theatre company differencEngine will present The People’s Revolt, a new immersive interactive experience at the Tower of London.

Set in the near future, events mirror those of the Peasants Revolt in 1381 led by revolutionary Wat Tyler, when people’s protest turned to violent revolt over taxes, austerity and unstable leadership.

Past and present are brought dramatically together in this modern re-imagining. Digital storytelling provides real-time updates from an underground network of rebels as they advance on London, before audiences of twenty find themselves singled out as key conspirators leading Tyler’s assault on the Tower of London itself. Choice and chance are at play between the age-old Tower walls. How will the fate of the nation be decided; will history be re-written?

The People’s Revolt is created by differencEngine, makers of the critically acclaimed Heist, in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity that cares for the Tower of London. Co-founder of differencEngine, Andrew Sommerville, says of the partnership: “Working with Historic Royal Palaces allowed an unusual opportunity to explore the parallels of a nation in the midst of political uncertainty, unrest and austerity with those of modern times.”

Chief Learning and Engagement Officer at Historic Royal Palaces, Elizabeth McKay says “The Tower of London tells the story of how power has been negotiated in our society over a thousand years. Historic Royal Palaces is always looking for new ways to present moments from the Tower’s past as questions for today. This exciting new partnership with differencEngine presents an opportunity for London audiences to make decisions, negotiate scenarios and weigh up moral choices in exploring how key moments in our national story were forged.”
