Oy Bar Balham
Oy Bar in Balham is a smart little spot that feels both relaxed and well thought out. It’s the kind of place you can drop into casually, but it also works when you want somewhere a bit more special. The interior is simple and unfussy, with just enough atmosphere to make it feel lively without being crowded or loud.
We started with oysters, which were the standout. They were fresh, clean, and served with minimal fuss-exactly how oysters should be. Each one had that crisp, salty flavour that makes you instantly want another. The sardines, served with bread and pickles, were another highlight. The fish was rich and full of flavour, balanced nicely by the sharpness of the accompaniments. To round things out, we had moules marinière. The mussels were tender and generously portioned, with a broth of white wine, garlic and cream that was excellent for dipping with sourdough. It’s a simple dish, but when done well, it’s hard to beat, and Oy Bar definitely got it right.
Drinks are clearly taken seriously here. The cocktails are well made and balanced, not overcomplicated or dressed up with unnecessary extras. They feel confident and reliable – whether you want something refreshing like a spritz or something stronger, they’re mixed with a good sense of proportion. They pair especially well with the seafood, which is always a good sign that the menu has been considered as a whole.
The wine list deserves a mention too. Rather than being overwhelming, it’s split into three price points, which makes choosing straightforward. There’s an entry-level option that’s good value, a middle range for something with a bit more character, and a top tier if you want to spend a little more. It’s a clear, no-nonsense approach that keeps the focus on enjoyment rather than second-guessing the menu.
Service throughout the evening was friendly and efficient without ever being overbearing. Staff were happy to answer questions and make suggestions, but they also left space for us to enjoy the meal without interruption. Combined with the easygoing setting, it created a comfortable pace that made the evening feel unhurried.
All in all, Oy Bar delivers exactly what you’d want from a neighbourhood seafood bar: fresh produce, simple but well-prepared dishes, solid cocktails, and an accessible wine list. It’s not flashy, but it doesn’t need to be. The focus is on doing the basics properly and creating a place people will want to return to. On that front, it succeeds completely.
