Driftwood Review
Throughout summer, the Underbelly Festival showcases some of the best circus, burlesque and comedy acts. One such show is the international circus sensation Casus with their new show Driftwood.
In the last couple of years, there appears to have been an increase in human circus shows where the performers amaze the crowds with feats of strength and agility. Driftwood is another such show, however, it’s so much more. At the start of the show, I must admit I thought ‘ok I’ve seen this before’ but with each new balancing act or show of strength performed on stage I was more and more impressed. Johnny Brown, Jon Bonaventura, Shannon Vitali, Sarah McDougall and David Trappes are mesmerizing on stage and the audience didn’t take their eyes of them during their one hour performance. Driftwood also breaks gender stereotypes with Sarah McDougall being one of the strongest cast members on stage. Her feats of strength and agility are remarkable.
There’s no fancy costumes or sets, and the show doesn’t need it. Driftwood is captivating and inventive, even in the quieter aspects of the show. There’s a sense of intimacy to the show and I couldn’t wait to see what the cast did next.
Driftwood by Casus is performing until the 4th of June and is a show not to be missed. Make sure you head along to the Underbelly to witness this show yourself.
