Pothercary Gin Review

I’ve been wanting to try Pothecary Gin for some time now so was extremely pleased when I was sent a bottle to review. Pothecary Gin was created by Martin Jennings and Lukasz Dwornik. They both shared a passion for organic, handcrafted, artisan produce and from this passion, Pothecary Gin was born. It is made by distilling each botanical separately, and then blending them together before dilution. This is said to ensure that the ‘optimum quality and the incomparable aromas and flavours produce an exciting gin that’s both well-balanced and refreshingly individual’. Their hard work to create this lengthy process did not go to waste as in the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Pothecary Gin won the Double-Gold Medal. This is the highest accolade to give a spirit in a competition and involved all 42 judges finding Pothecary Gin the best spirit out of 1,700 spirits. Pretty impressive, if you ask us.

The five botanicals in Pothecary Gin are Lavender from Provence, Lemon peel from Sicily, Tilia flowers from Poland, Juniper from Bulgaria and Black Mulberries from Anatolia. The result is a citrus based gin with floral head notes and sweetness from the Mulberries. I certainly preferred this gin straight the more I sipped it and the floral notes made themselves more known. It is recommended to drink this gin neat with one of the following recommended garnishes. These include Lemon peel or a thin-cut half slice, Orange peel or a thin-cut half slice, Grapefruit peel or a thin-cut half slice, Fresh Rosemary – lightly hand-crushed or Fresh or Lemon Thyme sprig – lightly hand-crushed. My favourite garnish had to be a slice of orange. I found this helped the gin be a tad sweeter and take away the initial tang of the citrus botanical.

I am a traditionalist though, so I much preferred Pothecary Gin with Tonic Water and an Orange Slice. The tonic water allowed the lavender to take centre stage. I’m a sucker for a floral gin and this hit all the right spots. I recommended taking a big smell of your gin and tonic before sipping as it helps bring an almost honey flavour to your drink. It’s really quite delightful.

We also always love it when a gin suggests a range of cocktails for us to try. Our favourite was the Gin Fizz Royale by Tommo Quy from Captains Club Hotel. It consists of 35ml Pothecary Gin, 15 ml Lemon Juice and 15 ml elderflower Cordial. You shake, then pour into a large Champagne flute and top up with Champagne before garnishing with lemon zest. It is absolutely gorgeous and a lovely cocktail to wow any dinner guests with. We sure did feel fancy drinking these when I had some friends over for dinner one night.
