The Real Greek Review

The Real Greek (the popular greek food restaurant chain) has been redeveloped and is now open in Dulwich. The redevelopment has allowed more guests to enjoy their food and drinks in the gorgeous Santorini Island inspired interior or outside in their beautiful al-fresco dining area.

We were looking forward to eating here as we know The Real Greek sources their ingredients from Greece and Cyprus whenever possible, and are developed with Tonia Buxton, Greek Cypriot and face of Greek food in the UK.

The food is served tapas style in cute little afternoon tea like carts. This allow for more space on the table and is something that other restaurants like this should take on board. A major plus in our columns for this restaurant is that the majority of the food options are Gluten Free. As my friend is Celiac, this is not often the case and he struggles to find options to enjoy. In terms of drinks, there is a decent selection of Red, White and Rosé wines. You can’t go wrong here with the wine as it is all excellent and there’s something for everyone’s tastes.

For starters we went with a mix of Houmous, Greek Olives, Feta Cheese and Grudites. Light and fresh we were really pleased with the portion sizes. Especially the Feta, it was huge and we couldn’t finish it.

Our mains consisted of Pork Belly, Lamb Skewers and we’d be amiss if we didn’t have Halloumi. I polished of most the Halloumi as I don’t eat lamb and my Pork Belly was a little dry. I think this is the traditional way it was supposed to be cooked so no fault of the chefs at all – just not to my taste. My friend enjoyed both meat dishes and his lamb disappeared before you could even say the words Lamb Skewers!

Dessert is one of my favourite parts of a meal so was looking forward to trying some traditional Greek desserts. I couldn’t go pass the The Greek Filo Pie. This traditional dessert from Sérres, North Greece is called Bougatsa and consists of Filo pastry filled with a unique custard cream, served warm and topped with vanilla ice-cream. OMG I pretty much licked my bowl clean. The word delicious doesn’t even begin to describe it.Unfortunately after being spoilt with a majority of Gluten Free Dishes on the menu for our starters and mains, there was only one Gluten Free dessert. The Greek Yoghurt with Walnuts in Syrup He did enjoy it though which was positive, especially as he’d never tried Greek Yoghurt before.

The Real Greek does Mezze at its finest. We loved our time spent there as waiters were both attentive and allowed us to enjoy our meal. They were also incredibly friendly and wouldn’t allow us to leave without a shot of Ouzo. This was the perfect Digestif to finish our meal.
