Shan Shui Social

A Vibrant, Heartfelt and HEARTY Feast in Victoria

Nestled in the stylish surrounds of Victoria, Shan Shui Social delivers a riotous, heartwarming celebration of East Asian cuisine with a modern twist. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, we were met with a warm welcome that instantly set the tone for an evening full of generosity, flavour, and thoughtful service.

The staff at the Victoria branch truly went above and beyond. We’d heard whispers of a Lychee Manhattan cocktail that sounded too intriguing to pass up. Unfortunately, they were out of lychees that day – but in an unexpected show of hospitality, the team sourced and ordered some in just for us. That level of care and commitment is rare in London’s busy dining scene, and it left a lasting impression.

We began with a selection of dim sum and small plates, and each one was a masterclass in texture and balance. The har gao shrimp dumplings were plump, delicately translucent, and packed with juicy prawns. Even more impressive was the cheong fun – silky smooth rice noodle sheets tightly rolled around perfectly cooked prawns, their mild sweetness offset by a rich soy dressing. These were super authentic.

Chef Jason Li’s Shanghai smacked cucumbers were another standout – lightly pickled, refreshing, and dressed in a punchy garlic and sesame oil mixture that made them completely addictive. But it was the Sichuan hot and sour soup that really stole the show early on. Richly spiced and beautifully balanced, it’s possibly one of the best renditions we’ve had in London: vibrant with white pepper, tangy with vinegar, and brimming with depth. It’s also my favourite dish ever, so perhaps I’m biased!

For mains, we went all in – and our table looked like a banquet scene. The Sichuan crispy chicken came perfectly crisped and coated in fiery red chilies, with just enough heat to keep things exciting. Beside it, the famous Cantonese roast duck was nothing short of melt-in-the-mouth perfection. Glistening, tender, and packed with flavour, it had that classic, lacquered skin and rich meat that defines a good Cantonese duck.

To accompany the mains, we ordered wok-fried vegetable noodles, a plate of glossy seasonal greens, and classic egg fried rice, best served all mixed together in my opinion. Each side dish felt considered and well-executed, not simply fillers but standouts in their own right. The noodles in particular had just the right bite.

Dessert was a gentle finish: mango pomelo sago, a dish of diced mango and pomelo segments swimming in a creamy, coconut milk soup. Light, fruity and refreshing – the ideal palate cleanser after a fiery, indulgent meal.

And then there were the cocktails – a real selling point of this venue. The newly acquired Lychee Manhattan was everything we’d hoped for: boozy and exotic, with a delicate sweetness and herbal backbone. We also tried the Lychee Blossom Breeze, which was soft, fruity, and beautifully presented, and the Pink City Cosmo, which brought a fun, zesty finish to the lunch.

All in all, Shan Shui Social Victoria is doing something special: crafting a dining experience that feels both elevated and deeply personal. Whether you’re in for dumplings and drinks or a full-blown feast, this place has all the hallmarks of a local favourite in the making. They also have one in Heathrow airport serving up MUCH more elevated cuisine than any other pre-holiday stop off in our opinion.
