Singles Supper Club By Gooce Review

Sick of modern dating and swiping right? Try London’s first Singles Supper Club.

Gooce, London’s first Singles Supper Club, partners with various restaurants for a night of delicious food, great conversation, and new connections. Gooce was founded by Luce McCallum and Gabi Adams, childhood friends and former housemates, in 2018. Both were over the online dating scene and wanted to bring a different experience for Londoners with the focus on meeting people in person rather than reading a profile. So Gooce’s Singles Supper Clubs are carefully curated dining experiences where everyone attending is single.

Upon arrival, each guest is given a glass of Prosecco and this is a chance to mingle and start getting to know one another. This first bit is a little daunting but that in itself is the way many of us started a conversation and introductions. As everyone is single and for this event aged 32-42, a number of us commented that this did take the pressure off throughout the evening and we liked that there were no expectations.

About half an hour later, we were told to locate our name at the assigned seat. The communal tables and alternate seating arrangement of male/female allowed for a variety of combinations of conversations- sometimes with the person next to you, others with the 3/4 people sharing the dishes with you.

After the first course the ladies moved tables and after the main course the males moved tables. Even though this is a concept in speed dating the amount of time was ample and it didn’t feel rushed, as the organisers give reminders for the seating swap. The conversations I was part of ranged from job descriptions, to Married At First Sight Australia, to travel plans, experiences of moving to London and many more.

Along with the welcome drink, the ticket includes a 3-Course Supper Club. The menu is a feast of seasonal dishes designed to encourage conversation and sharing. The sharing starters include three dishes: burrata with heritage tomato and sun-dried tomato pesto, hummus with sweet and sour grilled aubergine and sourdough toast, and potato bhaji with mint, coriander and ginger dip. The hummus was creamy and smooth, and the potato bhaji had a nice kick to it. More slices of the sourdough toast would work well.

Mains were grilled bavette with chimichurri or a Spinach and Camembert Wellington. Sides included seasonal vegetables and sweet potato rounds, and a shared garden salad. A couple of people at the table had the Wellington and said it was nice. The steak was tender and flavourful. Of course dinner isn’t complete without dessert. The Chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream was rich and delicious. All of the portions were good sizes and the spacing of the meals gave ample time to talk to other guests.

Last week’s Singles Supper Club was held at The Table Cafe in Southwark. This is an award-winning restaurant  focused on sustainable sourcing and offering simple dishes.
