St Patrick’s Day – Haché Burgers fires up the smoking gun!

A couple of years ago I made the pilgrimage to the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park’s Bar Boulud to try what was reputed to be the best burger in London. “Are these the best burgers in London?” we asked the waitress as an intended rhetorical question. “Oh no” she replied, and listed “at least three” other establishments before her own.

London is awash with upmarket burger joints, not least on the Fulham Road’s “beach”. Having recently been to nearby Sophie’s Steakhouse (http://oninonline.com/sophies-steakhouse-bar/) I headed back to SW10 for another protein fix. Despite the preponderance of local steak houses, the fact that it was a Monday night, and, recent scaremongering branding red meat the new tobacco, Haché was packed.

I’d been tempted West by the promise of Haché’s St Patrick’s Day Burger. The extremely charming waiter couldn’t explain what linked the burger to the Irish saint, nor was it immediately obvious. I hazarded a guess that it might have been the addition of the Guinness cheddar cheese and he agreed that this seemed likely. In any event this rosemary and thyme infused beef burger was deliciously succulent: and the chef achieved the rare feat of producing the medium rare burger asked for. The burger was dramatically presented,  arriving in a smoke filled glass cloche, whipped off with panache by the smiling waiter. There was a little too much coleslaw for my liking, but the sweet cure bacon added to the smokiness and the brioche bun was a further layer of luxury. Even better, at £9.95 it was a steal.

We also tried the incredibly tasty rosemary lamb burger, topped with mint yoghurt: rather like an anglicized and up-market lamb kofte (also £9.95) with sweet potato frites (£3.95) which let me think there was something healthy about my supper.

The jury may be out as to where to find the best burger in London, but in my view, you can’t go wrong with these reasonably priced burgers of exceptional quality.
