Sundays are for Steak at Macellaio!
Hold the roast this weekend, this steak restaurant is a must-visit
I remember when I used to walk by this restaurant! I used to live in Angel and Exmouth Market was an absolute favourite haunt of mine. I vowed to go and shamefully, it took far too long to action!
Macellaio RC is actually a growing family of three Italian restaurants in London. The restaurants are most famous for its fine steak. In fact, Macellaio means “butcher” and the team like to call its steakhouses the butchery with tables. The steak they serve is exclusively from the Fassona beef breed, sourced from special mountain valleys in the north of Genoa.
Being an Italian establishment, the welcome is as warm and full bodied as its excellent wine list and the gorgeous Exmouth Market restaurant also has a lovely little courtyard – ideal for sipping Spritz’s in the summer.
The waitstaff are all experts in butchery and fine meats, and the team take pride in sourcing incredible authentic Italian ingredients, food with utmost respect, preparing it with love, and expertly cooking each dish bringing to life a delightful trattoria dining experience.

Before we ordered our starters, we were kindly seated, served up some wicked Negronis and in front of us was placed a candle – of lard/beef fat. This melted whilst lit and to soak up all that fatty goodness, fluffy bread was placed on the table. A very promising start!
To start, we kept to the theme of beef – when in Rome – and went for the Steak Tartare Italian style, served with olive oil, salt and pepper, as well as the Beef Carpaccio. Both were rich and tender, bursting with flavour and well seasoned.
For mains, we were delighted to be ‘shown’ our steaks before we decided on our preferred cut. Our friendly waiter artfully talked us through the options with a finesse and expertise that evidenced his deep knowledge. Meanwhile, cute Italian kids, weaved through his legs – it’s clear this is a family establishment which almost adds to its Italian authenticity!

After much deliberation, we decided to go for the 500g Revolver. A ribeye served off the bone of Angus beef from multi-awarded “Ocean Farmers”. It comes with the bone marrow also. Sides are kept nice and simple here, which initially disappointed me a little, but when the meat came, it was clear to see why – there is only one space for star of the show here! We did order some roast carrots, green salad and chips to go alongside, which were all lovely.
The steak. Wow where do I begin. It was served perfectly crisp on the outside and medium rare and juicy on the inside. It was succulent and perfectly warm. Honestly it was the best steak I have had in a really long time, maybe ever! I would 100% pay the £73.00 for this cut again and it was the ideal size to share between two ladies. I would probably upside if you’re on the hungrier side!
Full to the brim, we couldn’t leave without trying their classic Tiramisu and a rich and tasty Old Fashioned for the road. I love a roast as much as the next person, but I can’t recommend switching it out for an epic steak experience here. You can then spend the afternoon perusing the boutiques and independent bars of Upper Street. A perfect London afternoon if you ask me…
