Tough Women in Sport and Adventure Exhibition launches for International Women’s Day

Celebrating International Women’s Day, Canary Wharf’s Crossrail Place Roof Garden will host an exclusive photography exhibition: Tough Women in Sport and Adventure by Photographer Nyla Sammons

The exhibition will celebrate the stories of ten incredible women who have gone beyond the realms of ordinary, from rowing the Atlantic solo to swimming the Molokai channel in Hawaii to even breaking World Records.

Open to the public, this free exhibition runs for one month, starting on Tuesday 5th March and is hosted in Canary Wharf’s award winning Crossrail Place Roof Garden, a beautiful 300-metre enclosed garden with an abundance of plants and trees.

Photographer Nyla Sammons was inspired by Kiko Matthews who broke a World Record for rowing the Atlantic solo in 2018. Feeling enthused by Kiko’s achievements, Nyla wanted to honour these victories and inspire a new wave of woman with a hunger for adventure and sport by producing a portrait series on Tough Women. Women featured include Pip Stewart, Kiko Matthews, Laura Kennington, Beth French, Anoushé Husain, Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent, Laura Hoggins, Ruqsana Begum, Anna Blackwell and Emma Kirk-Odunubi.

Each woman featured in the series will have two portraits on show at the exhibition, one photographed in a studio and the other photographed in their natural environment to better tell their story.

EVENING TALKS – IN CONVERSATION WITH TOUGH WOMEN

During the week of the launch, there will be three evening talks with some of the woman from the exhibition. On the evening, guests will learn about their personal journeys – about the highlights of adventure and sport and the challenges they faced. The evening will start off with a five-minute documentary screening, featuring some of the Tough Women, directed and filmed by Nathalie Baker.
