Waterloo Food Fortnight Review

Waterloo Food Fortnight was a great event bringing some great beers to Londoners from 27th June-12th July. Brooklyn Brewery partnered this event and brought 4 main events to the fortnight. The Launch Party, Five Beer and Five Dishes for £15, Beer and Board Games plus Beer and Bites provided intriguing methods for trying some craft beers from both the Brooklyn Brewery and London Fields Brewery.

Onin London attended the Beer and Bites event at Greensmith’s Waterloo – the butchers, bakers plus food and drinks specialists – to try some various beer types from Brooklyn and London Fields Breweries. The host Gabriele provided an in-depth discussion on each beer and good food combinations to pair these beers with. Craft beer and food pairing is ever more popular as flavour profiles are beginning to combine perfectly with certain foods, much like wine does. Not everyone jumps for the standard lager these days. People want more from their beers. This is what Brooklyn brewery and London Fields brewery are providing with some delicious beer options for all – including non-alcoholic options.

The beers sampled fromm Brooklyn Brewery on the night were classics like the Brooklyn lager (which I need not explain), Special Effects which is the non-alcoholic hoppy lager with a similar flavour profile to Brooklyn Lager. The other few beers from Brooklyn brewery were the Bel Air Sour, Naranjito Orange Pale Ale and the limited-edition beer from Comic Con Brooklyn Defender which is a punchy IPA. From the above beers Naranjito Orange Pale Ale was my favourite. It sounds like a strange combination, but it doesn’t have the orange flavour come through until the beer is swallowed, leaving a nice orange finish in the mouth. A very refreshing beer for the summer.

London Fields Brewery also provided some beers for us to try on the night. These were the Hackney HopsterPale Ale and Three Weiss Monkeys White IPA. I have tried Hackney Hopster before and it is one of my all-time favourites with the perfect balance of hops in the pale ale. Three Weiss Monkeys White IPA surprised me as I do not normally enjoy the white beers, but this is one I enjoyed and will recommend to my friends who enjoy white beers.

With all this beer we were able to enjoy a nice sausage roll fresh from the butcher around midway through our session. This sausage roll did not need any ketchup and trust me when I say this as I normally drown my sausage rolls in ketchup.

Overall it was a very enjoyable and knowledgeable evening with great insight into some new beers which will become part of my go to list.
