Witness For The Prosecution Review

Agatha Christie is a household name in the UK with her spectacular mysteries, thrillers and who-dunnits being translated from page to stage to screen. Given this, when we were invited to attend Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution.. well we couldn’t say no.

The star studded cast consists of Harry Reid (EastEnders’ Ben Mitchell) as the accused, Leonard Vole,  Lucy Phelps (Call the Midwife, Anthony & Cleopatra, King Charles III) as Romaine, Richard Clothier (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Graduate) as Sir Wilfrid Robarts, Julian Curry (The Alchemist, Rumpole of the Bailey) as Mr Justice Wainwright and Peter Moreton (The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare in Love) as Mr Mayhew.

While each actor/actress is phenomenal, it was Harry Reid who was the standout. I couldn’t take my eyes off him on stage as I desperately tried to work out whether he was innocent or guilty. This was helped by Director Lucy Bailey’s vision of placing the audience into the middle of the drama by staging it at the gorgeous council chambers in South Bank’s County Hall.

I do a little bit of work in the legal profession outside of Onin.London so have spent time in court rooms witnessing trials, so I was a bit worried about how this would translate on stage. Would I be sitting there saying to myself ”that wouldn’t happen” or would I be amazed at the accuracy of the drama unfolding in front of me? Luckily it was the latter. From start to finish, it wasn’t hard to see why this production of Witness For The Prosecution has been recognised at the 2018 Olivier Awards with a nomination for Best Revival.

Top tip: if you purchase the exclusive VIP Jury Ticket you will play the part of the Jurors in the trial. I must admit I was slightly jealous watching the Jury being sworn in and taking part in reading out the verdict.

Witness For The Prosecution takes place Tuesday to Saturday, 7.30pm and matinees on Thursday and Saturday at 2.30pm and Sunday at 3pm. The show runs until 31 March 2019. Hurry up and get your tickets now, you’ll be in for a treat.
