Sunday Roasts at Balans No.60

Good food, good times and bloody good cocktails

A Soho institution. Balans No.60  has been situated in the heart of Soho since 1987. A go-to spot for cocktails, dancing or dinner, but did you know the space also serves up a ruddy good Sunday roast?

If you’re looking for a wholesome afternoon, I’d suggest going somewhere else. This space is flirty, fun and ourageous. The servers have bold personalities and looks, and cocktails are strong and shaken.

I would kick off with a Porn Star Martini. With a flourish, I was told that Balans in Soho, serves up more Porn Stars than the entire city – it’s no surprise these walls hold a multitude of stories, secrets and scandals.

When you’re positively lubricated, it’s time to move on to the main event. Starters include a full range of classics, and probably aren’t needed as the roast portions are generous. However, we indulged in some tasty Croquetas and Honey Drenched Fried Chicken – not the lightest of starters – but delicious all the same.

For the main event, we tried the Roast Beef and Roast Chicken. No word of a lie, the chicken must have been a whole chicken, it was positively gargantuan. Each was served with fresh vegetables, crispy roasties and a large flaky Yorkshire Pudding. No complaints here, the meat was cooked well, everything was hot and tasty and the gravy was rich and flavoursome.

For the indecisive, you can opt for a Dessert Platter for finish, which includes smaller portions of Banoffee Pie, Crème Brûlée, Lemon Tart and Mini Doughnuts. The perfect sweet and indulgent finish.

We’d certainly recommend trying a few more of the holiday-inspired cocktails. We tried a Kiwi Spritzer which was a fresh and zingy mix of Kiwi, sauvignon blanc, London Essence Soda with kiwi and sumac bitters, and the Watermelon Sugar which was a tropical concoction. This is a roast that is followed up with an after party, as guests are invited to dance and let your hair down afterwards.

Many a celebrity has been spotted here, including Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga, so when deciding on what to wear this Sunday, go for the glam. You never know who you may bump into.
