Bullards Gin

ONIN recently attended the launch of their cocktail masterclass which pairs their gins with new partner- juice brand, The Berry Company. We also got to try the yet to be released gin. To give you a hint of what this taste like, think about the emblem of Covent Garden and hospitality.

In the 1.5 hour masterclass Bullards ambassadors will share the story of the brand and how it’s one of the award winning gins in the UK. We were fortunate to have Russel and Joe, the father and son team behind Bullards, share this story, and it’s easy to tell they are committed and passionate with great sense of humour.

Bullards London Dry gin features tonka bean as a key ingredient which gives a vanilla flavour and smooth finish. We used this in a Blueberry Gimlet cocktail. This was a refreshing cocktail featuring The Berry Compnay Bkueberry, and was a great way start to the evening. The second cocktail starred Bullards Strawberry and Black Pepper gin. We created a Strawberry Super Berry Smash cocktail by combing this gin, with The Berry Company Superberries, Double Dutch Cucumber and Watermelon and thyme to garnish. This sweet but bursting with flavour gin would go well as a Pimms with lemonade or paired with a sparkling wine (and Bullards happens to be releasing their first batch of rose sparkling wine soon!)

Next was Bullards Old Tom gin- this was a mango and honey flavour gin with a golden hue that had a whisky like quality to it. It’s superb as a neat gin with ice. Using this gin we mastered a Cranberry Ice Tea Cocktail which features The Berry Company Cranberry juice, lemon juice and soda water.

My favourite cocktail of the evening was the Forage Bramble. Add 5 blueberries and 25ml pure sugar cane, 50ml of Bullards Coastal gin and a splash of lemon juice.  Bullards Coastal gin is one of the most unique on the market with its ingredients foraged from the Norfolk coastline including sea purslane, marsh samphire, sea aster, Douglas fir and wild fennel. This gives it a savoury, salty taste that brings back memories of walking along the shoreline or admiring a coastal view.

Bullards also released a Norwich City gin which has been released under the new title of ‘Lemongrass and citrus gin’. A highlight of the evening was being one of the first in the county to sample the newest Bullards gin. The ‘Spirit of Covent Garden’ launches in March and was inspired by the symbol of Covent Garden and hospitality- the pineapple. As this suggests it combines flavours of pineapple, ginger and lime and would go brilliantly with ginger ale.

We were impressed with the sustainability model Bullards is using- once you finish a bottle you can buy a refillable pouch of gin delivered to your door and post the empty packet back to then to recycle. The bottles are absolutely lovely, reminiscent of sea glass. They have a long neck and heavier frame to support easy pouring.

Bullards will be moving from their current premises of 42 Market Place, Covent Garden, WC2E 8RF to new bigger premises also in Covent Garden. Bullards cocktail masterclasses cost £50pp and can be made through the Bullards website.
