Cellar SW4: Clapham’s New Wine Bar

Cellar is a new wine bar that’s recently opened in Clapham North. It’s been brought to fruition by the same people behind Dvine Cellars (situated on Landor Road), a popular independent store that specialises in fine wines. Dvine Cellars regularly hosts wine tastings and one of the recurring complaints from customers was that there was nowhere in the local area where you could sit and drink good wine. However, with the opening of Cellar just a few weeks ago, Dvine Cellars has sought to change just that.

Cellar is situated opposite Clapham High Street Station on Voltaire Road, a stone’s throw away from the high street itself. The bar has a small frontage but boasts a surprisingly large amount of seating, most of which lies upstairs beyond its large and inviting windows. It’s a well-lit and air-conditioned space making it a perfect place to while away summer afternoons and evenings.

There a smaller atmospheric lower floor where you can find more tables, all with the same makeshift, tatty-chic vibe. You’ll find sawn off wine bottles acting as candleholders and tables made out of reclaimed packing materials. I wouldn’t say the seats and tables themselves are the most comfortable but it gives the place an independent feel and a healthy dose of charm.

In terms of the wine list, there are 15 wines available by the glass and 50 available by the bottle. And this is just where Cellar is starting off – they have plans to extend their menu as soon as they can. One real benefit of Cellar is that it boasts wines that you just won’t find anywhere else and to wine connoisseurs this will be a big draw. However, if you’re like me – a local who loves the occasional glass of wine – then I’d say it’s a nice enough place to visit with a friend or two, but I don’t think the venue is well laid out for large groups (unless you colonise the lower floor). Overall, I had a very happy visit with friendly and helpful service and I think with the right friend I’d definitely return for another glass of wine – more likely two…
