Field Day 2016

Festival season always attempts to coincide with the start of the great British summertime and as one of the first festive outings of the year Field Day received the UK’s famous welcome. Rain and lots of it. However this wasn’t to dampen the spirits of its attendees as ponchos were donned and shoes, well, mostly taken off as we embraced the glorious weather.

And lucky for us the music was amazing. There was an eclectic mix of electronic, psychedelic rock and sort of every where in between.

Saturday was a bit more hardcore with deep beats and a more intense vibe. In the afternoon upbeat and melodic Yeasayer got the crowd going on the main stage followed by Four Tet’s set which is always pretty awesome. Floating Points instrumental DJ set really kicked of the Resident Advisor tent and the amazing BICEP closed the evening with a bang. We hung around there before catching the tail end of James Blake although maybe it should have been the other way round!

However with the arrival of Sunday came the most beautiful eclectic mix of psychedelic music. It was awesome with a more wholesome super chilled vibe. The Mystery Jets showcased some of their new music which was reminiscent of Peace and has grown from the band that started out. But two acts totally stole the show. Swedish born GOAT and their upbeat fusion music got the crowd absolutely buzzing. Such stage presence donning intrcate costumes that moved with their expressive dancing, they would actually have been perfect for the main stage.

The second was Brian Jonestown Massacre. Bloody amazing, tambourine extraordinaire Joel Gion. He is a mega babe. His incredible facial expressions and jazzy tambourine-ing bloody made it. The other guys were incredible too, they created an old school sound that encompassed you like a rhythmic hug and embraced you regardless of whether you knew the words or not.

The last two acts Air and PJ Harvey were the perfect mellow ending for a surprisingly balmy Sunday evening. I thought they were too mellow at one point but then realised I could happily snooze when I got home not back totally wired.

Throughout the two days there was also a  peppering of great off the beaten track music acts. We stumbled upon some older guys jamming with clarinets at one point, but by Jove i can’t remember who they were! It’s fun to find obscure new music too.

Aside from the music there were some Field Day fun and games and a whole host of incredible food stands. We had chance to try Born and Raised mushroom pizzaCheeky Indians (@thecheekyindian) incredible Indian street foodMakatcha (@makatcha_eats) and their vegan peanut curry (so drooltastically amazing) and our old fave Budda Bowls (@veggie_heaven) (who have revamped their recipe into a salty, sweet and creamy delight). It kept us dancing for two days.

I have to admit there were far to many food stalls. For one we couldn’t choose what to have, also there were numerous stalls selling the same thing (surely competing against each other?) which made you feel a bit sorry for the poor sods slogging away in their tents. However the food was amazing!

Overall Field really surpassed our expectations. Cracking music and totally the right vibe for each day, the Field Day chaps have got this day festival thing down and check out the others in the series here.
