Goode and Wright Review

This is not my usual approach to a review but I was so impressed by the service, the menu, and the atmosphere during my recent trip to Goode and Wright, 271 Portobello Road, Notting Hill that I felt it had to be stated from the outset.  It was my pleasure to spend the evening in one of the most charming places I have ever had to fortune to visit.  Staff were eximious (what a lovely word) in knowledge and service. The food? Well the food was impeccable.  Manager Alex was on hand all night to make recommendations of tasty treats that would send my taste buds on a whirlwind ride through the culinary heavens.

The menu boasted eclectic dishes such as Seared diver scallop – charred pear – charred lettuce and Bavette Steak – swede puree – Essex mushrooms.  The menu was simply delectable, a real delight.  Admittedly there was so much on the menu that I would have loved to have sampled that I surrendered and simply asked that Alex bring me dishes he held dear to his heart; I was not disappointed.

To start, I was presented with Pumpkin Ravioli – crab & smoked butter – Nduja, one word, divine.  The pasta of the ravioli was cooked to ‘al dente’ perfection with the pumpkin filling seasoned to just the right measure.  The smoked butter sauce flavoured with crab and Nduja, an unusual combination but a union sanctified by the Gods.  Yes you guessed it, I fell in love. Plates ceremoniously cleaned, I was moved onto a main of Buttermilk marinated Chicken Schnitzel and Salad on an Avocado Puree.  I vaguely remember looking up from the dish when asked by Alex if he had made an acceptable choice, aside from this my meal had my full and undivided attention! By the end my belly was thanking Alex for being born haha.

No meal would be complete without a naughty but nice pudding.  I was torn between the Bergamot posset – Strawberry Eton Mess and the Queen Cox Apple and Pistachio Tartlet with Vanilla Ice cream.  I sought the advice of one of the charming Goode and Wright staff who without missing a beat told me that it should be the tartlet, every time!!! I could relive the time I spent with that tartlet many times over….the best course of the evening.  Not too sweet, just right!

As you have rightly guessed, I was bowled over by my experience of Goode and Wright.  They even have a great selection of cocktails created exclusively for Goode and Wright by The Talented Mr Fox. It is an establishment that takes pride in its delivery and has an innate understanding of the importance of the whole dining experience. Every visit will be a surprise as the menu changes daily and if my menu experience is anything to go by I am hopping in my seat in anticipation of my next visit.
