Grumbles 60th Birthday Menu Review
When the restaurant has been in business for 60 years you know they must be doing something right. Grumbles, an iconic Pimlico restaurant, is celebrating its 60th birthday with limited-edition birthday menu.
Grumbles is known for its menu of British and French classics. The limited edition menu comprises three courses with glass of house wine for £44.95. It pays tribute to favourite dishes over the years, taking diners on a tour of Grumbles past and present.
There’s three choices for starters: avocado Grumbles with prawns & Marie Rose sauce, pan-fried tiger prawns with garlic, chilli, olive oil & parsley or half a dozen Escargot in garlic butter. The escargot swimming in butter and garlic was a great contrast to the prawn sauce which had a lovely kick of chillies. The sauces were so good that we were dipping fresh bread into them.
For mains there’s Grumbles’ fish pie topped with piped potato, chargrilled calves’ liver & bacon with onion compote or Grumbles’ fillet steak with a crust of English mustard and brown sugar. The fillet steak came highly recommended by our host and his description of blow torching to caramelise the mustard and sugar made my friend change her order from fish. We both took a bite and were amazed. The perfect combination of sharp tang from the mustard hits perfectly with the brown sugar crust. Served with tomato and fluffy chips, it’s absolutely one of the best steaks we’ve had.
We were full but of course there’s always room for dessert! There’s a choice of Vanilla ice cream with toasted almonds and hot chocolate sauce or Eton Mess. I can’t remember the last time I had this tradition British dessert which is a mix of fresh strawberries, meringue and whipped cream with a little mint on top. It was a pillowy, creamy yet light and summery dessert that was simply delicious. The friendly staff also went out other way to make my friend a cappuccino with oat milk.
Founded in 1964 by Jeremy Friend, the much loved neighbourhood bistro has retained its original style. He wanted people to feel like they were joining him as a dinner guest at his own home. There’s wooden seating, eclectic artworks and vintage photographs of Grumbles’ previous staff and regulars which contribute to a warm, welcoming feel. Some of the notable regulars include The Beatles, Diana Princess of Wales and Princess Margaret, and more recently, Tom Hiddleston. Current owner Alex Turnbull is only the third owner over the past 60 years.
Overall, we had an amazing meal with friendly, attentive service. We could not be more pleased. We hope to be back soon. Here’s to another 60 years Grumbles!
The limited edition menu finishes 31st October. Opens Monday to Saturday 12pm- 2:15pm and 6pm-10:15pm, and Sunday 12-3:15pm and 6pm-10:15pm.
