HAPPA Review

If you ever find yourself in Berlin, make sure to visit HAPPA for a 100% plant based and zero waste meal.

Owners and founders Sophia Hoffmann and Nina Petersen pride themselves on being certified organic and both socially and economically sustainable, but what’s more; the food is equally as delicious.

We visited for lunch, and they have a weekly changing menu including a hearty stew, homemade focaccia, a main, side, grilled sandwich, salad and some sweet treats. We both ordered a warm winter salad, which was made up of bulgar wheat, sweet potato, roasted broccoli and almonds, and shared a side of roast potatoes with lemon mayo and white kimchi. The food was really tasty and filling and I can imagine that if I lived or worked locally, I’d be a very regular visitor for their salads! They also offer a lunch special, comprising of a main dish and a homemade lemonade for just 16 Euros.

After our meal, Nina kindly talked us through the food and their ethos, including how they partner with suppliers who make the most sustainable, fair, authentic, long-lasting and delicious choices possible.

In the evenings, walk ins can order a 3 course comfort food menu (also possible a la carte) with a selection of drinks. On the weekends, from 7pm, they also host a ticketed 5 course dinner with different themes and a changing menu every couple of months. The restaurant can also be booked exclusively for private events.

The overall restaurant vibe was very homely and cosy, and the décor was bright and quirky – with pink walls and pictures of pigs on one wall, and polaroids of lots of cute dogs in the bathrooms. As a bookworm, I loved that the restaurant had shelves of Sophia’s cookbooks and even though they are currently only printed in German, the pictures on the page of the recipes looked very tempting. They also sold a range of products from some of their suppliers including jams, honeys, and chutneys – unfortunately, nothing under 100ml to fit into my hand luggage restrictions!

I’m so pleased we were invited to visit HAPPA and would highly recommend it to anyone who is visiting Berlin. After our meal, I ordered a Chai Latte to take away, then went for a walk to see the infamous East Side Gallery graffiti….
