Home Alone With Fork N’ Film Review
We’re been getting into the Christmas spirit in the last couple of weeks and our latest festive activity was Fork N’ Film’s dining and cinema experience of Home Alone last Thursday (21st).
Though Home Alone is a Christmas classic, I actually haven’t seen the movie in years. I know the basics- Kevin is left at home and defends the house against robbers- but I wouldn’t have been able to say what he ate. Now, due to Fork N’ Film Kevin McCallister’s most memorable food moments were brought to life and we got to eat what he ate as he was eating it the screen.
On arrival we were handed a welcome drink and taken to our table. We had a side booth seat affording us a good view of the screen. One of the favourite snacks of cinema goers – popcorn- is already waiting at the table ready to dig in. There’s some light live music in the background. The doors opened at 6 for a 6:45 showing an we do recommend arriving to ensure you’re seated in advance of the screening.
First up was a red, white and green salad in the shape of a wreath. This was made with basil, Arugula cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, lemon zest, and balsamic drizzle and was a healthy, light start to the night. The Snowflake Shovel Sipper comprises Monin Orgeat, pineapple juice, coconut milk, spiced rum, monin white chocolate and coconut flakes. My friend and I aren’t the the biggest fan of desiccated coconut so this wasn’t our favourite cocktail. We did love the creativity as it’s served in a garbage can, with a spoon shaped like a shovel and the coconut looking like snow.
We then had a cheese pizza each served in a takeaway box. Yes Kevin, ‘a cheese pizza just for me’! It featured mozzarella, fontina, Gruyère, aged Parmesan and white truffle oil. Of course, being a kid alone Kevin then has some dessert, so it was onto the ‘Junk N Rubbish’ sundae. This Vanilla bean gelato with chocolate drizzle, marshmallow and maraschino cherries was delicious. Thankfully ours was smaller size compared to Kevin’s as we still had more food to come. The attention to detail is great here with the sundae coming in a red bowl and Fork N Film colouring their pizza box similar to the one onscreen.
Next was the Firecracker pot roast served in a pot. I had expected the pot to be red based on the level of detail from prior dishes and clips I’d seen online of Fork N Film, but ours were in white pots. I had the braised short rib whilst my friend had the vegetarian (mushroom) option. It was served with root vegetables, smoky demi glacé and rosemary sprig. On a cold winter’s evening this was such a warm and hearty meal so I really enjoyed it. To wash it down, the Christmas Tree cosmo arrived. Served in a bouble which you tip into a glass rimmed with green sugar, it was was enough to fill the glass twice. Made with cranberry juice, vanilla vodka, lime and Cointreau it was a little sweet for my preference.
While Kevin makes a microwaveable mac and cheese, so did we- though ours was a little fancier with the inclusion of lobster. As Kevin leaves milk and cookies for Santa we were served M &M cookies with spiced eggnog. Due to where we were sitting we were often served first for the other items though these came to us last. That in itself wasn’t an issue but as soon as the movie ended people were leaving and staff were cleaning and we still had half of ours to go, so we did feel a little rushed with this. The amount of food and portion sizes was great- we felt very full afterwards with 4 drinks and 6 dishes.
Due to the nature of the event there are audiences members talking at different occasions throughout the movie. You’ll also have audience members, like ourselves, taking videos or photos throughout the movie. We had a very enjoyable time and laughed aloud during the film. It was a unique experience and is definitely a fun activity. I even plan to watch Home Alone 2 this weekend to continue Kevin’s adventures, though this time I’ll have to make my own food!
